Physics Cardboard Boat Regatta
Funded Sep 20, 2017The glue has arrived! Students are already bringing in cardboard to share as they plan for the spring semester. We will begin designing in class in January. Students will start to build outside of class during the spring months. They are excited and beginning to ask questions. Your generosity is inspiring the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers and engineers. Thank you so much for being an integral part of this project. I can hardly wait for May to see what new and creative ideas emerge!”

Physics Cardboard Regatta
Funded Oct 9, 2016The glue has arrived! We will start designing our boats in January. Planning, designing and calculating water lines is only the beginning of the learning. Students will build their boats second semester and thanks to all of you, each team will begin with a gallon of glue. Just today, a student asked, "When are we going to start the boat project?" Students look forward to it all year. The 24th year of the PHS Cardboard Regatta promises to be the best one yet. We truly appreciate your support and generosity.”

Poudre High School Cardboard Boat Regatta
Funded Dec 8, 2015Next week, my students will begin designing their boat. Thanks to you each group will begin with a gallon of glue. We will learn about buoyancy and Archimedes principle then put this knowledge into practice. Many students attended the boat race in past years or have older siblings who learned from it so they are excited and already asking for details. Thanks to Donors Choose for providing a platform for community support. As a donor, my students and I thank you so much for your generous contribution!”

Physics Cardboard Boat Regatta
Funded Sep 24, 2014Thank you so much for contributing to the 2015 Physics Cardboard Boat Regatta. The glue has arrived. Although students won't begin constructing their boats until second semester, having the supply of glue on hand is a piece of the project that is in place thanks to you.
This year my classes are smaller than in previous years and student engagement is terrific. I am confident that this group of students will be creative and innovative with the boat project. I can't wait to help them get started. My sincere thanks goes to you for helping me continue this incredible tradition and hopefully inspire the engineers of tomorrow's work force.”

Physics Cardboard Boat Regatta
Funded Oct 7, 2013The glue arrived to my classroom last week. The students are really excited! Some of them can't wait to start building their cardboard boats. They have to wait until next semester to get started. We have more background learning before they can begin the design (and I'm pretty sure their parents won't mind having the project in the garage for 2 months instead of 7!).
I know that the boat project will encourage even more of my students to pursue STEM careers as they enter college. This project introduces them to engineering and allows them to see that this field requires creativity, innovation and perseverance.
Your contribution is appreciated. You never know who you will inspire!”

Carboard Regatta Support
Funded Dec 31, 2012Thank you so much for helping me fund the Physics Cardboard Regatta. Your contribution will provide a dumpster for the cardboard remains of the boat as well as a port-a-potty for the event. These items will improve the relationship between my school and the neighborhood that graciously hosts the event.
My students are currently in the planning phase of the boat race. They are designing their boats and using equations to predict a water line that will help determine how stable and mobile their boats will be. They are very eager to move into the building phase.
The culmination of the project will be the race which occurs in May. It is an event that the students will remember for a lifetime. I truly think it motivates some of the best and brightest minds to pursue engineering. These students will solve many of the problems that face us today. Thank you for contributing to this opportunity to hone their problem-solving skills while having so much fun!”

Physics Cardboard Boat Regatta
Funded Sep 5, 2012Thank you so much for your generous contribution to my physics cardboard boat regatta. Supplying the glue for this project really evens the playing field for students from all backgrounds. I continue to hear from former students about how the cardboard boat race influenced their decision to study engineering in college. This fall, I was at a university and happened to bump into six former studentsâevery one of them was pursuing an engineering degree! While I believe strongly in developing the problem-solving skills on paper in the classroom, building a real project brings my students' interest to a whole different level.
Your contribution makes it possible to continue this nineteen-year tradition at our school.
I hope you know that you have inspired a future generation. These kids learn how to apply book knowledge in a real situation, how to problem-solve in a hands-on manner, and most importantly they learn how to work together. I feel that these are skills that will serve them well in college and beyond.students'”

This classroom project was brought to life by Kia Motors America and one other donor.Physics Cardboard Boat Regatta
Funded Jun 1, 2011Thank you for your donation to the Annual Physics Cardboard Regatta. Last year's boat race involved a record number of students and featured the largest boat ever built for the race. Thanks to the generosity of a local disposal company, we were able to provide a dumpster and leave the neighborhood cleaner than ever. Thanks to you, this year's students will begin the project with a gallon of glue.
A former student of mine sent me an e-mail detailing how he built bookshelves for his college dorm from discarded cardboard and wheat paste. He was inspired by participating in the boat race. He plans to become certified in secondary education and teach technical arts. Another former participant in the cardboard regatta joined our staff as a teacher this year. He is teaching math and will help me with the boat race this year as it is one of his most impactful memories from high school. Not only has this project inspired students to give back as teachers, but many participants go on to study engineering and consider this their first engineering project.
Your donation enables me to continue this tradition and strengthen it for future students. I truly appreciate your contribution to education.”
