In my Special Education SDC program, I service students with mild-to-severe disabilities who are also English Language Learners. My students will use magnetic word builders, whiteboards and letters during intensive guided reading instruction. My students will use the 120 Magnetic Chart during our whole group Number Talks. My class will use the hands on regrouping kits, place value practice boards, factor triangles, and area tiles for both whole group and small math group instruction. All of these Language Arts and Math manipulatives will be used in my program for: verbalizing mathematical thinking, discussing ideas and concepts, relating real-word situations to mathematical symbolism, working collaboratively, expressing problems using a variety of strategies, reflecting on experiences, making presentations, taking ownership of learning, and gaining confidence in students abilities to find solutions. My students learning will be enhanced because they will be able to acquire knowledge through active processes of engagement. These manipulatives will be used daily and will be key in providing effective active engaging lessons that will allow students to move from concrete experiences to abstract reasoning. Students in my classroom are 2-4 years below grade level and the use of manipulatives in my Special Education 3rd-5th grade Elementary classroom will help my students gain skills and a deeper understanding of mathematics and literacy. These manipulatives are essential in my SDC Special Education Program because they would support my entire classroom by providing each of my students with ample opportunities to visualize, manipulative, verbalize, and demonstrate their thinking. These manipulatives will not just support my students for one year, however, for many years to come. Please support my special thinkers with this project.
