  • Graphic Novels Are the Future

    Funded Sep 25, 2016

Thank you so much for your donation. You have made it possible for my students to not only read books, but to read the kinds of books they like to read.

The books have been passed around so many times that many of the edges look worn and dog-eared - a sign of love and affection when it comes to books.

For my students who are just learning to speak English, these graphic novels have helped them improve their language skills as well as their excitement about reading.

I feel very lucky for your support, thank you so much from me and from my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lawler

My students need graphic novels to allow them to engage with complicated texts as well as spark their interested in reading! Let's face it: it's hard to get any 13-year-old student away from their multitude of screens and interested in reading. From Facebook to Instagram, Snapchat to YikYak, there's a new distraction born every minute that diverts student energy away from reading on the page. My classroom faces the added challenges prprovided by the English language gap (especially the challenges around decoding words and comprehension). The few graphic novels we have in the classroom so far have been passed between so many students that the pages are frayed and falling out. Increasing the numbers of these texts will mean that more students will have more chances to read books that excite and stimulate them.
