  • Chromebooks for Brooklyn Game Changers!

    Funded Jan 3, 2017

In the few months my students have had your generous gift of Chromebooks in our classroom, they've been able to type final drafts of their analyses of the novel we're reading, receive valuable real-time feedback from their teacher via Google Docs, and publish their writing on the book review website Goodreads. In addition, they've been able to view and respond to video and audio clips that provide historical and background information to supplement their understanding of class texts, and build off of each other's ideas in online classroom reading logs. My students love the autonomy of being able to use these tools in the classroom, and they are proud to see their finished work published. Students ask important questions about what we read in class, and we often turn the end of class into a research session, so I get the precious opportunity to teach my students about finding information on the internet. We couldn't have done this without you!”

    With gratitude,

  • 3 More Chromebooks (and 10 Headsets)!

    Funded Jan 5, 2017

Thank you again for helping us to reach our goal. The additional Chromebooks go a long way in ensuring that every scholar in my classroom gets to make use of powerful technology in the classroom. We use Google Docs and Slides regularly in the classroom. I'm able to give my scholars real-time feedback on their writing, and scholars collaborate and advance discussion of their reading assignments in shared Google Docs. The headsets have also been really great, giving scholars the opportunity to deepen their understanding with film and audio clips that support class reading materials. We are so appreciative of your generosity in making this happen, and take great pride in being able to have you as members of our classroom community.”

  • Our Scholars Love This Book!

    Funded May 18, 2016

Thank you again for making our author's visit a really special event for the 8th graders. They were really proud to have read this book from beginning to end as a class, and eager to ask the author questions and hear his responses. Every scholar had a book in hand and was able to have it personally signed by the author. Not only was the event a success, but the experience gave our students a greater understanding of the important relationship between author and reader, exposed them to the experiences and processes of a real life author, and allowed them to think deeply about the relevance of the book beyond the scope of our classroom environment.

We are so pleased to have finished the year this way!”

My scholars are 8th grade boys attending public school. They are critical thinkers with great questions and strong opinions. They are growing up in a very complicated, fast-paced world. They come to school nearly every day of the year and stay for extended day programming. They are extremely loyal to one another and to their teachers. As their educators, we set out to develop and encourage in them resilience, confidence, effort, leadership and commitment to excellence. We are a Title 9 school in a low-performing district in NYC. Many of our scholars read below grade level and have low confidence in their reading and writing skills. However, they demonstrate a depth of curiosity and critical thinking that is undervalued in our society. We make tremendous effort to select high quality texts and design rich curriculum that celebrate the cultural riches and heritage of our scholars' communities. We want our scholars to see themselves reflected in that legacy.
