  • More Music for More Students-Xylophone Excitement

    Funded Feb 10, 2020

This additional xylophone and a glockenspiel that I purchased for my class have helped my class to have enough barred instruments for every child to play an instrument at the same time. This is very important for my students because they are young and they are not very patient about sharing. I plan to use the barred instruments to help my students learn about the notes of the various pentatonic scales.

My students were very excited when the xylophone arrived. Immediately, they begin to ask, "is it new?". They were surprised that the new instrument sounded the same as the older xylophones that we had; but they loved the new "shiny" instrument. They also liked that the new xylophone had two sided mallets; one wooden and one rubber. They enjoyed switching the ends of the mallets to see how this changed the sound of the instrument.

This instrument will be used in the music classroom for many years to come. I am in my 37th year of teaching, so there will soon be a new teacher to use this instrument with students. DonorsChoose.org has helped me to leave a legacy for students in our community for the future!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Robison

  • Drums for Our Kids!

    Funded Feb 8, 2020

I received the tubano drums and the shaker early in March. My students were so excited to see them! One third grader said "Can I just touch it? I just have to touch it!" The third grade students were able to use them in a program on March 13. The students played their parts acurrately and with lots of enthusiasm!! My students were very excited to see the new instruments. They are much bigger than any of the other drums that we have in the classroom!

I plan to use the tubanos and shaker to work on learning basic rhythm patterns with kindergarten, first grade, second grade and third grade students. We will also use the tubanos to help us tell musical stories with instruments. The tubanos will be great for representing the Giant in "Jack and the Beanstalk" or Papa Bear in "Goldilocks and the Three Bears".

I really wanted to add these instruments to our instrumentarium because I have been teaching for 37 years and I will retire in the near future. I want to leave my school with a good supply of high quality instruments. My district is not in the position to buy many instruments. Organizations like DonorsChoose.org have helped my students to have access to Orff instruments and the gift of making music.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Robison

I would like for all of my students to have the opportunity to play a large tubano drum. I am an Orff certified teacher and instruments are an integral part of Orff teaching. My district has bought several glockenspiels, metallophones and xylophones for our students but we have no large drums. I would like all of my students from PreK to 3rd grade to experience playing these large, authentic drums. My students would use the drums in daily lessons. They will use the drums to learn to read rhythms from music notation. The drums are an essential part of music learning. These drums will help students to develop the steady beat which is essential for musical growth. I have a budget of $250 a year. One drum is all I would be able to purchase. I will retire in a few years and I want the school's music department to have these instruments for the future. I have bought many small instruments for my students to use, but I cannot afford to make a personal purchase this large. We would use these drums both in classroom lessons and performances. My third grade students are preparing a program based on the West African folk tale called "Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears". Using these drums would help make this program more authentic and it would increase my students' understanding of African drumming and rhythms.
