  • Connecting Math and Reading

    Funded Aug 11, 2020

Thank you so much for your donations towards this project. It has helped me to begin a math library for my students interest. Remote learning has been a challenge, but the return to in person has allowed students to stretch their interests. We have many avid readers in our school who have been looking for new material to grab their interest.

All students have a weekly reading journal that they use for their English class. With this collection of books, I have been able to help students find new stories with a mathematical twist. It is common to see students reading on lunch or recess, and I am glad to be able to offer them some new books to choose from.

These books have helped students find connections between the world of math and other subject areas. By being able to read fiction books like Sideways Math and the Sir Cumference series, they are able to attach their enjoyment of story and infuse mathematical thinking. Mind and Matter has helped students see that being successful academical does not conflict with their other passions, especially athletics.

As we return to a more normal school environment, we will continue to provide reading materials for students. These books will also go towards my "Book of the Month" bonus task to encourage students to read things outside of their regular choice.

Thank you all so much for all your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Morrison

  • The Games of Mathematics

    Funded Dec 3, 2019

Thank you so much for your support of this project. It has greatly helped my students use their math knowledge in new and different ways.

My students were super excited when they first saw the materials. The idea of expanding our current collection with more games has added motivation for them to be successful. They want to show their knowledge using these games while playing with their peers.

Not only do we have a board game club for our 7th and 8th graders, we routinely do a "Fun Friday" as part of our math class. It has been great to see students interacting with each other in different groupings based on which game they enjoy.

We hope to continue to be able to play these once we return to school again.”

  • A Chromebook for Every Hand

    Funded Nov 29, 2019

Thank you so much for your donations to this project. I have been trying to become a 1-1 classroom for Chromebooks and these two help us move closer to this goal.

My students are excited to be able to to utilize more technology in class. They have been able to do more real-world specific tasks individually instead of in large groups. We have been able to plan the structures of a city (7th grade) using digital drafting, conduct a research experiment and analyze data (Algebra) and explore the connection between economic growth and linear graphs (8th grade).

The ability to use multiple methods for students to display their understanding and learning has been integral to the success of each students. They have started to find their own favorite assessment tool, and having the ability to this digital has been a huge advantage for them.

Thank you again for your support.”

  • Computing Real World Math- 1 of 5

    Funded Sep 30, 2018

Thank you so much for your support of my classroom.

In a technology driven world, we assume that students know how to use their resources. While many of my students are well versed in the social uses of technology, they are still learning how helpful it can be to academics.

We are using Chromebooks to help differentiate instruction by providing more individualized practice and application of topics. Students are exploring the application of mathematics to Spanish (graphing survey data), art (scaling pictures and maps), and Language Arts (economic inequality). They are also learning how to use programs such as Excel and PowerPoint to help show their mathematical knowledge.

Thank you so much for giving my students the ability to work with technology in class on a more regular basis.”

    With gratitude,

  • Interacting with Our Notebooks

    Funded Mar 10, 2018

Thank you so much for supporting our classroom. My students are extremely grateful for your donations.

The supplies have already been put to use in creating and maintaining their interactive notebooks. Being able to add color and fold-ables has allowed students to be use their notes in much more productive ways. By having their supplies at easy access, my students have been able to work independently with little class disruption.

These supplies will have a long life and by used by future students. I am excited to find new and unique ways to integrate these supplies more and more often.”

  • To the Moon and Back- Where Will Math Take Me?

    Funded Sep 29, 2016

Thank you so much for your generosity. My students have all taken to reading the book with excitement. It is a first for many of them to have to read books in their mathematics classroom and many are finding the experience very interesting.

As a class, we been able to talk about the mathematical topics throughout these books, in addition to having open discussions about the social and political issues of the time. Many of my students see parallels between the characters and people in their own lives. We will be going to see the movie once it releases in January as a field trip because of their interest in this topic.

Thank you again for helping to foster literacy throughout the disciplines and for helping give my students positive role models for their own future plans.”

  • Everyone Answers-- Write Boards

    Funded Jan 29, 2013

I can't begin to thank you enough for your generous donations to my classroom. My students have been excited to use the graphing white boards in class and ask when they will be used again. They have increased engagement and attention in many activities, and their confidence and their success has grown tremendously. It's so wonderful to see the students excited to do math. In particular, the students seem most excited about the jeopardy game we play using the whiteboards to help review for our next algebra test.

One of the hardest parts of being an inner city teacher is having limited resources which limits on the types of creative projects you can do with your students. Because of donors like yourself, I have been fortunate enough to never have to limit my creative outlets as an educator. I thank you and my students thank you. You have certainly helped make a difference in the lives of my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Morrison
