Every morning, my students engage in a 120 minute literacy block, which is divided into a whole-group lesson and literacy centers. My students look forward to literacy centers with the enthusiasm of a baseball fan at their first game! I will use the donated materials to expand students' repertoire of ways to engage with words in a meaningful way and maximize literacy center time. Whether students are with me or working independently with their group, center time is some of the most important time for them to develop their reading and writing skills.
I don't have many books aligned to my students' current reading levels, but independent reading is a vital part of centers and YOU are providing students a multitude of books at their levels, giving them opportunities to be successful, and ultimately building their confidence as readers. Additionally, a listening center with engaging texts continues to build their confidence as they are able to follow along and read with the narrator.
While at word work, students will use wikki stix, alphabet stamps, and magnetic letters to engage with sight and spelling words in different ways. These approaches will enhance their learning through different modalities, which means lots of fun, meaningful practice!
The most important part of centers is guided reading, which is the time when students meet with the teacher to read books that are slightly challenging. I pull out specific skills from the book to focus on throughout the week, including spelling patterns, sight words, reading strategies, and comprehension skills. In guided reading, they will see their teacher model spelling patterns and strategies on the tabletop white board. They will then use their individual magnetic word building boards to practice the targeted phonics skills, word families, sight words, and more!
