My 7th grade STEM superstars are set up to have a fantastic year! Already, my kids have caring parents/guardians at home, a supportive school environment, a team of special education professionals, and an eager new teacher, but we still need some basic supplies to keep our classroom stocked and fully loaded for learning.
Almost 90% of my students qualify for the free/reduced lunch program, and sometimes they run out of school supplies. My project seeks to make certain that I have enough supplies to share with all my students. It also requests a few big ticket items that will set my learners up for success. These items that are more expensive include sensory toys, wiggly seats, and fidget bands, which allow students with various learning disabilities to focus on content while also allowing for any extra energy to be used. In particular, wiggle seats have been shown to aid students (especially those diagnosed with autism) in sitting during long class periods. Scientists have found that a child's ability to wiggle and jiggle with sitting is helpful in maintaining alertness, and is similar to that of an adult drinking coffee throughout the day. I'm also requesting objects that will serve as manipulatives for students who learn better by touching and moving things, which is particularly helpful when doing math problems.
Some other supplies that I've requested include extra notebooks, colorful paper, markers, crayons, colored pencils, regular pencils, highlighters, reading strips and a timer. These will all aid in creating a classroom environment that is responsive to a variety of learning styles.
