In a (Book) Bind!

Funded Oct 11, 2018

One of the hardest concepts for students to grasp in my last three years of teaching has been figurative language. The abstract nature of this concept is often a challenge, particularly for my ESL students. Having a mentor text such as The Phantom Tollbooth has been immensely helpful in supplementing my students' learning, as we tend to revisit Norton Juster's colorful use of hyperbole, onomatopoeia, and puns throughout the year.

In addition to reinforcing ELA concepts, inspiring a love of reading is something else I can attribute to this text. Though written well before my students' time (my time, even), Norton Juster's book remains incredibly engaging, especially when used in guided reading. My kids clamored to borrow a copy when the box arrived in our room. It was quite an event!

I can't sing the praises of this book enough, nor can I ever thank you, donors, enough for helping to make engaging, educational books accessible to my students. From the very bottom of our hearts, thank you!”

With gratitude,

Ms. Ragan
