  • Spatial Awareness Alphabet Rug

    Funded Nov 16, 2023

Thank you for helping my class raise the funds for the spatial awaresness rug! It is a beautiful addition to our classroom that not only looks great, but is also instrumental in their learning. This spatial rug allows all of my students to have a space where their body is ready for carpet time. The rug is used multiple times throughout the day-every day. Because of your generosity, my class is becoming successful during mini lesson instruction and play time. The previous rug in my classroom has been there since I started teaching in this room, and is at least 14 years old. It was heavily stained and destroyed. My students deserved this opportunity for a new rug-thanks to you, now they have it!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ring

  • Interacting With Our Elders

    Funded Nov 13, 2018

This has been such a beautiful experience-not only for my students, but also for the elders at Carolina Assisted Living. The smiles and positive social interactions that is encouraged at our monthly get together is such an amazing thing to witness! We started our visit with introductions and morning meeting, where my students introduce themselves and shared what their favorite color was. We then split up into groups and worked on foundational skills in ELA consisting of letter building, word building, word puzzles, and phonics activities. Each group of students had a different activity that was specific to what that student is currently working on in class. Students had fun interacting with the residents while working on their ELA skills. They also learned patience and kindness for our elders. When they completed their ELA activities, students worked to assemble 45 snowmen with their "School Grandmas and Grandpas" for the elders to have as a keepsake of their visit. We finished our visit with learning about Faith the therapy dog who is there to help keep everyone calm and loved.

One of the major highlights of the visit was when my sweet student who is in a wheelchair met a very special "School Grandma" who couldn't wait to meet her. The resident said she was honored to meet my student, and my students got to see their classmate interact with another individual in a wheelchair-everyone was truly inspired!

Some of my favorite reactions to the trip were:

"This is their house? It's so big and huge!"

"I can't WAIT to come back again next month!"

"My favorite part was Faith the therapy dog because she is SO FLUFFY!"

Clearly, my students can't wait for their next four visits to interact with their School Grandmas and Grandpas. Thank you so very much for your donation and making this possible for all involved. It helps teach my students kindness, patience, and respect for our elders. You have helped to put a spark of excitement and encouragement in the lives of my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ring

I have a passion for the role our elderly play in our community. I know the importance of socialization that not only the residents need, but also our students need as well. The purpose of this grant is to promote a sense of community between residents at Carolina Assisted Living and Kindergarten students at Johnston Elementary. The past three years, my class has gone to Carolina Assisted Living where students bring books to read to the residents, the residents read to the students, we play music with each other, and bring a partially finalized art project to complete with the residents who then keep it. There is a lack in socialization that occurs in many elderly care facilities, and many of our students either don’t see their grandparents often, or don’t have grandparents that live in the area. The positive social skills/interactions that this grant could provide Johnston students is an additional perk to the added reading, writing, music, and art skills that will also be included in this project. The materials needed for this project include transportation fees, which is where I need your help. I have a system in place which includes a group read aloud, books students bring at their specific reading level to read to the residents, themed games, themed art work to finalize with the residents (who then keep it) and music time. I will cover any additional cost for special projects. We will meet once a month January-May, and the project will be servicing 24 Kindergarten students at Johnston Elementary. Because this is a social engagement project, I will make sure to have multiple activities planned as well as volunteer parent chaperones to aide in encouraging these positive social skills. Thank you for your consideration!
