  • We Need the Write STUFF!

    Funded Jun 5, 2019

It is certainly hard to teach at a school that does not have sufficient supplies necessary to carry out a lesson. The supplies I received for my class allowed me the ability to instruct my students.

Having paper and pencils were crucial for my class to participate in lab activities and close reads. When you look at the photos you will notice that along with participating in crating the lab project the students are recording their data. This data will help them to form and write their conclusions. With out your donation of these supplies this step might have been omitted.

    Thank you again!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rubin

  • May The Forces Be With You!

    Funded Apr 4, 2019

Thank you so much for your continued support for my classroom! The students have had so much fun learning about forces and experiencing fun and invigorating hands - on science.

When the boxes arrived, the students could not believe all the supplies they received. They were so thrilled that there are people in the world that would support their learning. My students know that I am in 100% of their learning, but strangers that they have never met are involved to help them succeed.

With all of these new supplies Science was clearly the best subject in the Middle School this past year!

    Thank you again!!”

  • Bubbleology- the Science Behind the BUBBLES! Physics 101

    Funded Aug 24, 2018

Thank you again so much for this wonderful opportunity for over 200 grade 3rd through 5th grade students at Donahue Elementary School. The students were so excited to be part of this informative assembly. The show was filled with the science behind bubbles and visually very exciting.

Leading up to the show the students participated in a week long bubble investigation. I provided the teachers with bubble solution and all the supplies they would need to facilitate the experiments. As you can see in one of the photos I have included a picture of student work. The student was so proud of her bubble wand and was able to clearly answer her conclusion and reflection on the lab sheet. She was so excited that her wand worked and that she was so successful that she felt like a "winner"!

I have many of the photos from the bubble show posted in my classroom to remind the students of the excitement they felt during the show. The labs and bubble wands are also on my "WOW Work" wall for everyone to see. It is so rewarding to be able to provide hands on activities to the students and reward them by putting all their knowledge to the test with the show. The presenter was equally impressed with the students science knowledge of bubbles and states of matter.

Thank you from the students and teachers from Donahue Elementary School!”

  • It's a Balancing Act Science!

    Funded May 9, 2018

Thank you so much for your donation of 6 Triple Beam Balances to my Science classroom. My students have been yearning to do some comparison labs - specifically weighing sour patch kids and gummy bears. There is always a conversation about the weight of candy when you teach 10 - 12 year old children. And I cannot argue with their desire to understand the difference in weight when it comes to your favorite candy!

When the balances arrived the students were so excited! At first, of course, they did not understand how they worked and their complexity, but as we did investigations on how to properly use the balances they quickly got the hang of it. Not only did they finish their work quicker, they tried to weigh everything with in reach. Nothing was off limits - I have never seen my students so engaged. My principal was walking by the other day and he thought that I was alone in the lab because it was so quiet while the students were participating in a candy lab.

So the next step is coming in a few weeks. My students will have the opportunity to participate in a Bubble Show. After the show the students will have the opportunity to weigh bubbles made with different ingredients! Because of the precise nature of the triple beam balance the students will be able to weigh the bubbles to the nearest 1/10 of a gram!! I am so excited- might be a little messy, but the outcome of student engagement cannot be thwarted!

    Thank you with undying gratitude!!”

  • Let's Get REAL Science

    Funded Mar 14, 2018

Thank you so much for your generous donation to send my students to the CT Science Center! Many of the students on the field trip have never been out of Holyoke and were so excited to be able to participate in this valuable experience. The students were so engaged and engrossed in so many hands on exhibits, and just generally having fun in great learning experiences.

I was so happy to be able to learn alongside my students outside of the classroom. As a teacher these are those "aha" moments where I can see how the learning in the classroom gets applied to learning outside the classroom. The students will never forget this valuable experience and were able to talk to the science center staff and employees about jobs in science fields.

I can honestly say that without your donation and support my students would not have been able to experience this amazing field trip. They were able to apply all their classroom learning to specific exhibits. We are learning about cells, human body and physiology and the "Bionic Me" and Health Labs were perfect for investing these topics further. Thank you again for your generous donation. You have forever changed the way my students think about science and specifically the way they think of museums.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rubin

  • Make It CLEAN - Keeping the Germs Away

    Funded Jan 30, 2018

Thank you so much for the safety glasses for our new lab class for grades 5 and 6. The impact of your donation ensures that my students are using proper safety equipment while conducting and carrying out their experiments. As I tell my students "You only have one pair of eyes ands they need to be protected."

Having the safety glasses is only step one, the ability to keep them clean and sanitized is the other. There are many germs that can be transferred from the human eye and the goggle sanitizer can protect the students in just 15 minutes. My students are so appreciative of your donation. They feel like real scientists by the ability to use real science equipment.

Today we will be using microscopes and preparing slides using onion skin. The safety glasses will certainly come in handy while peeling small samples of the onion skin. The students then place their safety glasses into the goggle sanitizer and they are cleaned and ready for the next class. I have 4 science blocks in a row, so the ability to clean the glasses so quickly and efficiently is amazing!

Thank you again so much for your donation.”

    Mrs. Rubin

  • See the Light and Hear the Sound of Science!

    Funded Jan 16, 2018

When I told my students that I posted a project on Donor's Choose they were so excited, but also a little confused. The students had a hard time understanding the concept of charitable donations, so we had a mini social studies lesson about donating to a cause. My students are not used to having high quality science supplies to use so seeing the boxes arrive was so exciting.

The supplies arrived in time to explore our unit on Light and Sound. I had some simple supplies for the light portion of the lessons, but my school was very limited in sound supplies. The Snap-Circuits Sound sets were such a big hit. The students were so engaged! The best part of this activity is the circuits have great visuals that helped my newly arriving students from Puerto Rico, who lacked the english language skills. One day the principal stopped by to see why the students were screaming and laughing and became so engaged in the activity as well and stayed and played along with the students. He was so impressed that this type of activity can teach so many aspects of the science of sound. Also this activity is gender neutral, the girls were as successful as boys, so I could clear up gender misconceptions around science.

Also included in my project were graduated cylinders, safety glasses, tuning forks and Micron Timers. All of these supplies provided hours of science learning. My students did not have any safety eye wear, so having these high quality safety glasses makes my students feel like the real scientists they have become. If you look at the photos that I uploaded you can see the intense interest that these supplies have generated.

Recently, my second project was funded as well and now the students have a great goggle sanitizer for keeping those safety glasses clean! We are moving forward with gravity, gravitational force and cells and human anatomy. Thank you again for your generous donation!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rubin

My students do not have enough hands on science supplies to make 5th grade science exciting and enriching. Science needs to be hands on and visual to "hook" students early on in the elementary grades to encourage them to take science classes in Middle and High School. Research has found that students who have a solid foundation in their early years will continue to engage in science throughout their school years and may go into science as a career. By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement. I truly believe by placing the right tools in the hands of my students their understanding of the science concepts will be more concrete. We need the Snap Circuit Light Studio that will provide many hours and lessons of the hands-on learning my students need to succeed in understanding the concept of Light. Having safety glasses are a necessity to any successful experiment. The Prisms will provide a great visual of how white light is made of all the colors in the rainbow- the visual light spectrum. Students will be able to apply the knowledge they learn through testing and other applications and foster a true love of science!
