Funded Jan 16, 2018When I told my students that I posted a project on Donor's Choose they were so excited, but also a little confused. The students had a hard time understanding the concept of charitable donations, so we had a mini social studies lesson about donating to a cause. My students are not used to having high quality science supplies to use so seeing the boxes arrive was so exciting.
The supplies arrived in time to explore our unit on Light and Sound. I had some simple supplies for the light portion of the lessons, but my school was very limited in sound supplies. The Snap-Circuits Sound sets were such a big hit. The students were so engaged! The best part of this activity is the circuits have great visuals that helped my newly arriving students from Puerto Rico, who lacked the english language skills. One day the principal stopped by to see why the students were screaming and laughing and became so engaged in the activity as well and stayed and played along with the students. He was so impressed that this type of activity can teach so many aspects of the science of sound. Also this activity is gender neutral, the girls were as successful as boys, so I could clear up gender misconceptions around science.
Also included in my project were graduated cylinders, safety glasses, tuning forks and Micron Timers. All of these supplies provided hours of science learning. My students did not have any safety eye wear, so having these high quality safety glasses makes my students feel like the real scientists they have become. If you look at the photos that I uploaded you can see the intense interest that these supplies have generated.
Recently, my second project was funded as well and now the students have a great goggle sanitizer for keeping those safety glasses clean! We are moving forward with gravity, gravitational force and cells and human anatomy. Thank you again for your generous donation!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Rubin
