Since the first day of school, my kindergarteners have been using technology to prepare them for the 21st-century world. They have been using technology to develop math, reading, and research skills. However, in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, schools in Colorado have been closed and have moved to some type of remote learning platform. Our school is providing a combination of online learning and physical copies of all learning materials. My students complete and submit assignments every day, whether it is completed digitally or with paper and pencil. Given the current situation, many of my students feel isolated and miss their friends and the routine and structure that is provided by the school. To ease their anxiety, I begin each day with a story read aloud, just like we have done since the first day of school, except now via a video recording. My students tell me that is still their favorite part of the day. I have encouraged students to share pictures, stories, and comments with each other to maintain our sense of community.
However, several of my students have been struggling to access my Google Classroom, and that is why I need your help. Beyond the daily story read aloud, I also post instructional videos for writing, reading skills, and math. Through Google Classroom, I can also provide books for students across all reading levels along with differentiated research activities. I am hoping to loan out Chromebooks to allow these students to continue their education from home and continue their amazing successes. My students have been using Chromebooks at school with great success, so they already know the ropes.
This project helps students continue to build on the incredible progress they have made this year, and Chromebooks are key to my students' continuing success. Thank you!
