  • Opening Windows

    Funded Oct 30, 2021

First off, thank you for your investment in reading and literacy for teens in California! As a public school educator, funds can be limited and access to new fiction and non fiction is often not a priority. This grant and your specific contribution speaks a clear message: Books matter. Stories matter. Narratives that include people of color, transgender individuals and women. These narratives matter.

Reading and sharing more texts allows me to connect with each student individually. This year, after being away from campus for 18 mos, books especially offer a common, safe space to talk. I'm so grateful for the connections I am building with my students over reading, and could not have done it without my classroom library.

During these times, reading is a soothing constant we can hold onto. Adding new, important books to the library is crucial for student success. Your donations launched my Graphic novel choice reading program! Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Bonnar

  • Becoming an Upstander: Stamped

    Funded Oct 18, 2020

It's hard to put into words how grateful I am for your donation to my project. I am committed to providing students with a relevant curriculum that develops lifelong skills, and it is inspiring to see so many others who share my vision for education. Thank you for partnering with me!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Bonnar

Difficult dialogues, those involving race, equity, and becoming an "Upstander", need a starting point. I see books, texts as this calm center. Stamped: Racism, Antiracism and You, a Remix by YA author Jason Reynolds provides this middle ground on such an important topic. The donations for this new undertaking will allow my students to read in a place of intellectual and socio-emotional safety while at the same time probing their thinking. We will learn about the power of individual choice to shape history, to rise up and participate as just, compassionate citizens.
