PasPort to Science
Funded Apr 29, 2009I can't tell you how much DonorsChoose.org and donors like yourselves have helped me to really build a fantastic science lab! The students in our school will be conducting experiments using the new PasPort digital thermometers and loading the data into our computer. One of the most difficult areas for the students to grasp is that of Investigation and Experimentation standards. They also frequently have difficulty translating their classroom experience to multiple-choice answer tests.
I think that the PasPort technology is a wonderful tool, not only for recording data and making it visual to compare data, but also because we can take the information and discuss the scientific process.
Thank you so much for coming to the DonorsChoose website and selected my project to fund.”

Signs of Life
Funded Apr 29, 2009Thank you for deciding to browse the projects on DonorsChoose and finding something special about my "Signs of Life" project. I inherited the science lab about 2 years ago and have found it difficult to piece together the items I need to teach cohesive lessons with a lot of impact. Many of the supplies that came with the lab were either missing parts, not functioning properly, or were simply old or outdated.
Being both a scientists and artist, I really felt that the items I selected for this project would really give a powerful punch to the students' understanding of the human body and life science in general. Of course, the first attraction for the students were the sets of "smelly markers," On the first day of their use, many students left my classroom with a rainbow of small dots on their noses from enjoying the scent! But the markers work excellently for making posters and large mural/butcher paper projects.
The software and human body equipment is an outstanding addition to my supplies!
Thank you for donating to education.”

It's Alive!
Funded Apr 2, 2009Wow! I am so incredibly pleased with this project! I already make a home for a variety of live specimens for students to observe. My science lab houses turtles, green anoles, a king snake, and occasional animals that children find and bring to me. However, this is the first time that I have been able to integrate an entire ecosystem into the classroom where multiple types of animals can live together!
The students have been thrilled with the addition of the River Tank to our science lab! They have been doing a lot of work on ecosystems in their own classrooms, and their hard work has paid off as we use the time in the science lab to construct a working ecosystem where both plants and a variety of animals live together. The students have been put charge of planning, setting up, and maintaining the River Tank, and they are really excited about being the ones in control. I'm just sorry I couldn't have a separate one for each class! They are equally excited about the tarantula, gecko, and tree frog. I hope this will also be an opportunity to calm the scare factor of the poor spider!
This has been very rewarding. Thank you for your support of education, but also your support of science!”

Funded Mar 26, 2009Your donation has truly made a difference in our classroom. We have only begun to plan for the use of the video camera, and the students are very excited. The first graders are planning ways that they can become "Bindi of the Jungle." While I know that we won't be able to take things quite that far, their enthusiasm is very exciting. We do have many live specimens in the classroom that we can videotape and to observe their behavior, their specialized parts, and their environment. We have also begun a school garden that can provide a "locale" for their photo-shoot.
While they have entertaining production ideas, I am thinking along more practical lines, such as recording simple in-lab experiments that we can revisit and discuss.
Having the video camera available will provide my students with a technologically advanced opportunity to record, evaluate, and share their learning with each other and our school community. We hope to post some of our experiments on our website to share with families as well!
Without your help, our classroom would not have this wonderful enrichment opportunity. Thank you for continuing to support education, even during these economically difficult times.”

Funded Dec 23, 2008I am so thrilled that this project has been funded! This has been one of the most exciting studies that we have done in the science lab, and the equipment that you are helping to fund will continue to be used year after year in my classroom. Thank you, also, for continuing to give to education in this difficult economic time. Thanks for helping us see stars”

Funded Jul 10, 2008Wow! I'm so thrilled that this project has been funded! I hope that all of the students will get involved in composting and seeing the benefits while also learning about earth's processes. Fourth graders will get a hands-on experience in their ecosystem standards as well. This project has so much potential! Thanks so much for your generosity”

Matter Masters 1
Funded Feb 19, 2008Wow! I am so grateful to have this opportunity in my classroom! This will touch over 400 students at my school, and at many different ages. We look forward to using this tool in the years to come. I am very excited about this program and your donation.
Thank you”
