  • From Hot to Cold Again: The Journey of Water

    Funded Sep 18, 2019

I want to thank everyone who gave to this project. I am overwhelmed with gratitude for continuously being supported by the general public and community alike. My students are constantly amazed at what we keep finding in boxes!

The ice maker and electric kettle are a big hit with the students, and will certainly make water experiments so much easier to plan for in the Lab. The kids have been fascinated watching the ice maker work its magic, and we did some temperature testing already - on the first day of set up! We will soon be adventuring on our journey of water.

Thanks again for your contribution to my classroom environment and equipment. I could not create such a meaningful experience for my students without support from my generous donors.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Allard's STEAM Lab

  • From STEM to STEAM, Part 1

    Funded Sep 6, 2019

I am very excited about this upcoming opportunity to engage my science students in nature-related art projects. This is something that I have never done before, even though my bachelor's degree was in art! I am a bit rusty in my own art, but the kids and I will learn together.

I was inspired to take on this work after attending a NGSS summer training that hosted John Muir Laws as a guest speaker. We did some science notebooking that incorporated drawing, which is something that I already do myself, but he also showed us some of his watercolor nature studies. If you haven't checked him out, he has some great resources on his website.

The kids will be thrilled to get some art time in my room! Thanks to everyone that helped make this project happen!”

  • From STEM to STEAM, Pt. 2

    Funded Sep 6, 2019

I am very excited about this upcoming opportunity to engage my science students in nature-related art projects. This is something that I have never done before, even though my bachelor's degree was in art! I am a bit rusty in my own art, but the kids and I will learn together. The books that went along with the art supplies in this project will help me to approach art from the teacher perspective. I have also never worked with oil pastels myself, so I am sure that the kids will end up teaching me something as well!

The kids will be thrilled to try something new! Thanks to everyone that helped make this project happen!”

  • Picture-Perfect Science Library 1

    Funded Sep 6, 2019

I want to thank everyone for donating toward this set of books. I am revamping the lessons and activities that I do in my classroom to change things up, and have been gathering supplies, books, and resources for the Picture-Perfect NSTA series for both science and STEM. The books are fun to read, the activities are engaging to the students, and the lessons are easy to implement for the teacher. A win win all around!

I look forward to sharing the stories with the students in this upcoming school year and for years to come. There are enough activities between the different series to stretch over a few years without repeating, and I will be working to develop a three year rotation.

Thanks again for supporting my students and science education!”

    With gratitude,

  • Picture-Perfect STEM Library K-2

    Funded Jul 2, 2019

This project is going to be one of my biggest endeavors for my classroom! The Picture-Perfect series is a very well-respected curriculum from National Science Teaching Association, and helps to bring together literacy, science, engineering, and technology. The read-aloud books will be engaging and help the students make connections to the lessons and activities that we will be bringing into the classroom. I really look forward to building a rotating curriculum that I will be using for years to come. My younger students will really be excited!

There are enough activities in the series that I can stretch them out for more than one year for my enrichment class.

I want to thank everyone who made this project possible, and SDG&E for matching donations. I do not know how I would be able to get so many supplies for my classroom without your generosity!”

  • Picture-Perfect STEM Library 3rd-5th

    Funded Jun 17, 2019

This project is going to be one of my biggest endeavors for my classroom! The Picture-Perfect series is a very well-respected curriculum from National Science Teaching Association, and helps to bring together literacy, science, engineering, and technology. The read-aloud books will be engaging and help the students make connections to the lessons and activities that we will be bringing into the classroom. Even my fifth graders enjoy the read-alouds (even though, sometimes they pretend they don't!), and I really look forward to building a rotating curriculum that I will be using for years to come.

There are enough activities in the series that I can stretch them out for more than one year for my enrichment class.

  • Mighty Mice for STEAM Lab

    Funded Jul 18, 2019

This project was simple in nature, but will have such an impact in my classroom. We have a collection of mismatched Windows computers. The mouse buttons and and pads are all in different places, which is often confusing to my younger students, and simply a nuisance to my older students. Often the kids accidentally click the wrong button, bringing up random menus on the screen, which as confusing.

With these mice, my students will be able to use our classroom computers much more successfully, and will be less frustrated!

Thank you for coming together as a team of (mostly) teachers who helped to fund this project, and to SDG&E, who has helped through their match offer!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Allard's STEAM Lab

  • Picture-Perfect STEM Supplies

    Funded Aug 9, 2019

The Picture-Perfect series helps to bring together literacy, science, engineering, and technology. The read-aloud books will be engaging and help the students make connections to the lessons and activities that we will be bringing into the classroom. There are a considerable amount of supplies needed to be able to teach these activities to 400 students, and this project will give a good head start for both the K-2 and the 3rd-5th kids.

The books, activities, and fun supplies (robots, mechanical sea animals, plastic animals, sand, and more) will be very engaging and purposeful!

I want to thank everyone who made this project possible, and SDG&E for matching donations. I do not know how I would be able to get so many supplies for my classroom without your generosity and the contributions from other teachers!”

  • Jack Up Our Cricut!

    Funded Jul 30, 2019

Thank you to everyone who came together to support this project! So many teachers helped to move this project along to fully fund!

The technology this Cricut machine and supplies brings to my classroom will be an incredible resource for my students in expanding their creativity. They will be able to use this Cricut machine to design and redesign a variety of items. It will also allow them to learn some new things about technology and to apply them to our STEAM activities. It will help me enhance our school environment.

This machine not only will help my students work through the design and engineering process, but also will be able to see the possibilities in invention and marketing,

Thank you again for all of your support!”

  • Engineering With EIE and Break Out!

    Funded May 8, 2019

Thank you for making it possible to add more engineering ideas and projects to my classroom. The Engineering is Elementary kits are great for my classroom and always get a positive response. I am so glad that I was able to add this kit to my classroom resources.

The kids are very enthusiastic about our makerspace and enjoy opportunities for building to solve a problem. Hopefully this will spark some to choose a STEAM career in the future. This particular topic is one that doesn't often get addressed, so that is a great bonus!

Thanks again for contributing to my school. The kit will reach quite a few kids!”

    With gratitude,

I teach science to all grades, TK-5, at our small elementary school. The students come to the Science Lab once a week for 1 hour or more each visit. Our school has a wide range of students in its population. We serve neighborhood children, military families, and students from areas of higher poverty that ride the bus to our school by choice. We have many cultures represented on our campus, free and reduced lunch for a little over half of our population, and a strong military family representation. Many of our students have a parent deployed. While our elementary classrooms focus on all academic areas, including science, the Science Lab is dedicated to the enrichment and enjoyment of both science and engineering, and challenges students to be flexible and creative problem solvers.
