Back to School and Into the Art Room!
Funded Aug 17, 2021I cannot describe how much our classroom has benefitted from the supplies donated through this project. You enabled us to have the materials we needed to successfully start the year off in our art room.
The crayons and markers have been used since the day they arrived. The oversized crayons have been very helpful for the kindergarteners, who are still learning fine motor skills and struggle with the typical sized crayons. The tempera paint and painting materials allowed for me to open our painting center. Students who choose the painting center particularly love using the tempera because it is so easy to use and requires little set up. The paints themselve came with a rack to store them in which is great for keeping our painting center organized!
Thank you again for your ongoing support of our art studio.”

Funded Jul 23, 2021Thank you so much for donating so we could purchase items to organize our art studio. This year we are back in the classroom and there were a lot of supplies that did not have a home. Our class practices Teaching for Artistic Behavior. It is so important for our studio to be organized so that the students can easily access their tools and materials.
As you can see from the photos, the large standing set of drawers is being used in our drawing studio to organize crayons and markers. The confetti bin is being used by our younger students to house Duplo Legos. The rainbow set of drawers have various activities the students can do, such as the tangrams.”

Funded May 4, 2021Thank you so much for your generosity! I have been working with my students to create their own art journals which they will get to take home with them over the summer. The students were very excited to have their own project outside of art class and felt very special that this project was created specifically for them.
We started our journals by recycling cereal boxes to make sturdy outside covers. The students turned the covers of the cereal boxes inwards so they could decorate the blank side of the boxes. They then used the donated materials to decorate the covers of their journals! Some students decided to collage with old magazines to further decorate their journals. Once the covers were created, we used the donated paper inside each cover to make the pages binding them with string or staples.
Each student now has their own journal they can use to draw or write in to process what is going on in their lives. I also found a great resource that has a list of reflective journaling prompts that I printed for the students to use. Thank you for making this all possible. Your gift has truly made a difference!”

Funded Dec 22, 2020We were so excited to receive our 3D pens through Donors Choose! It has been so fun exploring the overlap between art and science with our 3Doodlers. Kids who previously had been less engaged in art class were mesmerized by making 3D objects with the pens. The students love all the different colored plastic and the way the colors blend together when switching plastic rods.
While some of my upper elementary students had heard of 3D printing, most were not familiar with the 3Doodlers. When they got to play around and explore the capabilities of the pens they were so excited.
The students have enjoyed creating by following the tutorials that came with the manual and tutorials they have found on Youtube. There are so many different things that can be made with the 3Doodlers, the options are endless! Students have created 3D shapes, animals, glasses, and cars.
The 3Doodlers have been a fun, creative addition to our art class!”

Funded Dec 1, 2020Thank you so much for the opportunity to engage my artists through stories. It has been a joy to watch them listen as I read aloud the many stories you gifted to our classroom. In an age where it often seems like kids are constantly looking at a screen, these books have reminded me how children can truly be caught up into a book.
My classes and I have enjoyed engaging with many of the topics introduced by the books you have given us. For example some of my younger elementary school artists loved reading "The Day the Crayons Quit" by Drew Daywalt. Many laughed aloud as I read them this hilarious story that talks about a group of crayons "quitting" on their owner. The book introduced our lesson on color. We used the text and illustrations to talk about primary colors, secondary colors, and how to create artwork using a variety of colors.
In addition to using the books with my classes that meet in the building, I have also been able to read the books you gifted us to our virtual students. On Fridays I teach K-5 online. By reading books like "What do you do with an Idea?" and "Beautiful Oops" I have been able to introduce our virtual learners to topics such as the elements of art, how to generate ideas for our artwork, and how to keep working when we make a mistake.
The beautiful books you have given us have been such a great gift to each of Falkener's art classes. I am truly thankful and promise we will use these books for many years to come.”

Funded Oct 9, 2020Thank you so much for your gift. Through your generosity, I was able to receive a cart that I use every day for "art on a cart." Now I am able to push into each elementary classroom for art and bring along the supplies I need for the day! Prior to receiving the cart, I needed to try to carry along many supplies. This limited our options in art class and my ability to teach choice-based art.
When I first wheeled in our new art cart the kids could not hold back their excitement!! One class clapped with applause when they saw the new cart. The art cart holds all of our daily art supplies and the items I need throughout the day. The cart has side pockets on both sides which are so handy for everyday items like tape, rulers, pencils, and even my keys & water bottle. The cart has truly been a TOTAL game changer!
Now that we have an art cart, I am able to offer a selection of options to our students. I am beginning the process of transitioning to a choice based studio art class. This means that our students will have the choice of what they want to create and what medium they would like to use each class. I am only able to do this because of our art cart! Our cart will house containers that hold each portable "studio." There will be containers for drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, and many more! At the beginning of class, students will choose which portable art studio they would like to use for the day. After a brief introductory lesson, they will spend their time working on their creations.
Thank you again for making this all possible. I could not be a teacher without the support of others in and outside of my community.”
