Fostering a Love for Reading
Funded Apr 28, 2021Thank you for supporting our work here at our school to build culturally responsive classrooms! As a Literacy coach I strive to bring books to our teachers hands to use as read alouds that foster students understanding and loved of their identity, the identity of others and engage students in conversation on diversity. Our students love seeing themselves in the books we read. Our teachers love seeing our students connect to our readings and watch them flourish into their own selves.

Funded Aug 13, 2020Thank you for adding to our read aloud library! Culturally relevant teaching can only happen when teaches have culturally relevant materials. As my colleagues and I continue this work and bringing equitable learning experiences to our school community, it is donors like you that help us make it possible!
Adding read alouds that not only help us teaching reading skills and engage students in discussion but allow our students to see themselves in the characters or people in our books, they can make connections with others, build tolerance, understanding, knowledge, confidence and empathy.
We are currently in a Project Based Learning Unit that requires students to become social activists and find ways to improve their community.
The picture books that you all so kindly donated help us increase the depth of our conversations and provide scenarios for our students who are comprised of English as New Language Learners and Students with Disabilities to start and engage in deep conversations!”

Funded Dec 4, 2015In our classroom we are using our new resources to reinforce literacy and math skills. During independent center time, our kindergarteners independently use our centers to work with friends. While our kindergarteners are working independently, my co- teacher and I are able to work with small groups to reinforce strategies as needed.
One morning, I put the very large box that was shipped to us in the middle of the room. When our students came inside they are ran towards the box, touching it, knocking on it and saying, "What's inside!?" We sat in a big circle and I cut open the box. We made some predictions! I pulled out the centers and started passing out the boxes. I heard, "oh my new centers! I see numbers and letters!" They couldn't wait to try them out. We have worked very hard to take care of our centers because we know that you all gave us this wonderful present!
The next project on my mind is to purchase a few iPads to extend our learning and allow our students to become more technologically independent!”

Little Minds, Bright Futures
Funded Dec 30, 2014We were ecstatic to receive this wonderful gift in our classroom! My students immediately asked what was in the big black box! They were excited when colorful pictures came out of the printer your thoughtful donations allowed us to purchase. The colorful pictures that have been used to create math and literacy centers and anchor charts. Those colorful pictures have inspired my bright students to make their pictures colorful and realistic when writing stories or working in their writing journals.
Center time allows our classroom of English Language Learners to develop social and language skills. Our printer allows me to make materials that are colorful and engaging. Engagement in very important in our classroom as it allows me to work one on one with a student or in a small group.
