Ready to Read-Books Are All We Need!
Funded Jun 15, 2018Thank you so much for your generous donation. I have seen that my third graders love for reading has grown so much this year already. My students ask "when is it time to read" every single day. I have listened to my students laugh out loud when they are reading some of these new books. On the first day of school, my students were so excited when they saw the books that were in my library.
I have used several of the picture books during read alouds already. I read the book "Jabari Jumps" aloud to my class to teach them about goal setting and perseverance. I also am excited to use some of the social studies books to teach my students about concepts that will be covered this year. My students will also use some the of science and other nonfiction books for research projects that we will be doing this year.
My students read from 40 minutes to an hour a day. My students are working on "reading stamina" right now in our class. We are working on reading for longer periods of time and we are working on responding to what we are reading. These books are high interest for my students and they have helped my students in reading for longer. I also have students that read at a large range of levels and I have received books that can be appropriate for many of my students that are reading books of different difficulties.
Many of my students do not have books at home so they truly cherish their reading time. I have seen that my students have been interested in different series and genres. For example, I noticed that one of my students was very interested in the Squish series and checked another one out at his library. Some girls in my class have discovered the "Owl Diary" series and are recommending it to their friends. I have noticed that my students are reading together and sharing titles that they love with one another. My students have been having conversations about the books that they read. My classroom is truly becoming a place where reading is valued and enjoyed by everyone.
I cannot thank my donors enough for their generosity and all that they have done to expand my classroom library and instill a love of reading in my third graders.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Worstell
