  • Goodbye Virus, Hello Clean Air!

    Funded Aug 17, 2021

My students and I cannot thank you enough for the kindness you showed when you donated to our classroom project! As a school community that has already had partial class closures due to confirmed positive cases of COVID, we are all working together to try and keep each other safe. We try to socially distance as much as possible, we all wear our masks properly, we sanitize our hands and our desks often, and we stay home when we are not feeling well. These are all amazing measures that I am so proud of my students for taking seriously but the HEPA Air Purifier you helped us get for our classroom is our best form of defense against spreading the virus.

When I asked a few of my students to stay after class to unbox the air purifier, their excitement was contagious! I could not stop smiling at how their oooohhhhh's and ahhhhh's kept coming as they played around with all the different features of the air purifier. The very next day, as students walked into my class, many of them pointed out the air purifier and thanked me for the extra layer of protection. I made sure to let them know that the air purifier would not be there if it weren't for you, our class donors.

Once again, thank you for helping keep us safe during these difficult times!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Vuksevic

  • An Apple a Day Keeps the Achievement Gaps at Bay!

    Funded Sep 20, 2020

I have now been able to utilize the iPad you helped me acquire in my virtual classroom for more than 2 months. The changes to my teaching have been profound and I cannot thank you enough!

As my students rely heavily on my modeling of math concepts, being able to upload my slides to the iPad and present the screen as I write on it has been one of the most beneficial uses to date. Every day, my students now have a lesson presented the same way they would if they were sitting together in a classroom. I am able to write directly on my slide presentation as I interact with my students through a video call. I am also able to create tasks (such as interactive Jamboard and Peardeck activities) that we can all work on together! My students have made comments about how much better they are able to understand the material now that I am able to model the problems live with them and it is all thanks to you!

Having an iPad has also helped me "see" what my students "see". As they have all received iPads from the city, I can now direct them to set up their emails, notifications, etc by sharing my screen and modeling for them. These are real-world skills that they have asked for assistance with in the past and the best I was able to provide them with were videos from YouTube. Now, I can set aside time after school to model these key skills by sharing my iPad screen with them and downloading the apps that they use to learn how to use them myself. According to my students, having the ability to extend my teaching beyond math content has made them feel that their teachers will do whatever they can to help them navigate this digital world.

On a personal level, the iPad has helped me multitask while I teach. I can now take attendance, keep track of student participation points, and grade interactive activities, all while teaching. Before having the iPad as my teaching tool, my computer was tied up with the slides I was presenting. Now I can use my computer for the miscellaneous tasks I have to accomplish during any class period and do not have to wait until my work day is over to start on those tasks.

Most importantly, I am also now able to save each days lesson as a written-on PDF file and upload it to Google Classroom. This has been something that has helped so many of my struggling students when catching up on missing work. Many of my students were struck by difficulties and challenges at some point during this academic year and the most powerful tool I have been able to give them has been access to each days lessons even if they cannot be physically present during class time. Students can view the PDF's and videos I create and feel as though they were right there learning the lesson with their classmates. This has empowered them to make up work that they missed and bring their grades up to passing averages.

Without your generosity, none of this would have been possible. My students and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Vuksevic

My students come from all over the 5 boroughs of NYC but are mostly from West Harlem, Washington Heights, and the Bronx. They inspire me to find new ways to make them love math every single day. Coming from low-income families, my students push me to teach them how algebra is going to help them succeed in life. Finding those connections and teaching them to appreciate the complexity of solving equations, using formulas, etc are the very parts of my classroom that keep my students engaged and excited.
