  • Laptop for Deserving and Spirited Special Needs Students

    Funded Jun 14, 2016

Incorporating technology into my therapy sessions via the Laptop you all so graciously funded has benefited my students immensely. In this day and age it is important to keep up with the times and find what works best for your 21st century students and I found that this laptop has really expanded their horizons and for some has catapulted their progress and their excitement for learning. Technology truly helps make learning more hands-on and interactive and as one of my students said "it just makes all that you learn, come alive".

Many of my students do not have access to technology at home and this lack of experience could hinder them in their future endeavors and progress. I am so grateful that you have given me this opportunity to expose them to technology on a daily basis and show them how to use it appropriately, safely and to their greatest advantage.

My students are very special, all with unique learning styles and responses to various teaching modalities but I believe they all have benefited greatly from technology as a supplement to their therapy. Many of them communicate best via typing as opposed to verbal communication as a result of their various disorders The laptop gives them an outlet to type out how they feel, or give an answer/response to a question that they may have difficulty expressing verbally.

All in all, I have seen nothing but positive effects from incorporating this laptop into my therapy. My students' excitement for therapy as well as their progress during sessions have increased. As a Speech-Therapist there is nothing more I could ask for than for my students' happiness and academic and communicative success. Thank you all so very much, you have no idea how greatly you have impacted my wonderful students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Oliva

I am Speech Therapist at a Special-Education Elementary School. I mostly work with students with Autism ranging in age from kindergarten to 6th grade. Each and every one of them has a unique personality, learning style and set of interests and require varying levels of support in/out of the therapy room. Although my students fill my life with so much love and cheer, many of them come from low-socioeconomic status households, which truly breaks my heart. My students may learn and interact in ways that are different than how a "typical" child would, but in so many ways they are the same. They love music and dancing, they love laughing and playing games, they need attention and praise just as any other child would. And most importantly, they deserve to be given every opportunity and tool to succeed just as any other child would. If I could only use one word to describe my students, it would definitely be; inspirational.
