There are certain reading skills which are difficult for 3rd graders to grasp. Finding context clues, inferring what's happening, and drawing conclusions about what happens next are some of these higher order thinking skills they struggle with. These are the skills I want to focus on. I have found many good lessons which have the students act as detectives to look for clues that lead them to the answers. I would like to motivate my students by transforming my classroom into a crime scene and have them feel like actual detectives. The hats, glasses, mustaches, and magnifying glasses will get them into character. The crime scene tape over the entrance will create excitement for what's ahead. The highlighters and dry erase markers will aid in the lessons so the kids can isolate the clues that help them find their answers. When they are excited about the lesson, they put all their effort into what they are learning. Those students who struggle to focus on a lesson while sitting in their seat listening to the teacher will get the most benefit from a hands on activity such as this. I am going to incorporate these items into a series of the reading skills mentioned above. I will be purchasing lessons from teacherspayteachers.com which have been specifically designed to have the students play the part of a detective to learn these reading concepts.
