My students mostly come from low income/high poverty homes. Our school has 90% free and reduced lunch and our English Language Learner population has exploded over the past two years with many "newcomer" families who very recently immigrated to the United States. This means most students enter my room unprepared for Kindergarten and with little experience in a classroom setting. Despite these challenges, my students love to learn and enjoy building a community within our room. In addition to reading, writing, counting, adding, and subtracting, my students are learning how to interact socially with each other and within a school community. They are proud to be Gutermuth Cardinals!
