The twenty-first-century classroom and workplace are settings in which people from different cultures mix and work together. In the upcoming school year, we will be diving into students’ explorations of culture and its components—nationality, family, religion, ethnicity, gender, race, and subgroups—examining how these components shape their perceptions of themselves and the world around them.
As students seek to understand their own culture and the cultures of others, they are able to evaluate different perspectives and adjust their own thinking when given new or contradictory information from others.
For example, students will use the large Post-it Super Sticky Easel Pad to "map out" their own culture in a creative way. More specifically, students will be brainstorming and reflecting upon their experiences through the use of Post-It Notes. Once students organize their ideas, they will need College Ruled Filler Paper to write (with pencils) their personal narrative.
Students will also explore the concept of cultural identity and diverse cultural perspectives by examining a variety of texts that range from personal reflections to short stories and art. By studying a wide range of texts (that need to be printed, hence the Copy Paper) representing a variety of cultural perspectives, students make connections to their own lives to better understand the interrelationships among multiple cultures. Students will showcase these interrelations through a kinesthetic activity where they need scissors, glue, tape, and markers to engage actively.
