Since receiving my MAT for science ed, I have focused on ways to keep the students interested in learning. Building relationships and rewarding my students has made it easier to create my learning safe place. In building this environment, I have also made my class a place to make mistakes. When they make mistakes in my class, they show me where their gaps are, and I try to fill in those gaps with resources like Legends of Learning and Edpuzzle. These websites have YouTube videos and educational games that the student can interact with and learn more about the topics I have spoken about in class. In our data driving district, I have needed to find rewards that make the students want to do well on their weekly quizzes or tests. Working in an urban district, I have had to find the best rewards to make earning them worth it. Even though their tastes differ based on culture, they all have made it easier for me to find the best options. Since I started rewarding them on their quiz and tests scores, homework completion has increased. I believed this has happened since I always tell them that everything I assign is directly connected to the upcoming quiz. I have even gotten more writing projects from the students since I mentioned that most of their writing would help them study for the reading they will encounter in their tests. Rewarding students has caused my proficiency score to jump 62% in this 3rd quarter, and with help from a donor, we can get to 90% by the end of the quarter.
