  • Providing Fun and Organization to Brooklyn Kids

    Funded Mar 31, 2012

Thank you sincerely for your support of our classroom. It is very fitting that a business dedicated to helping people achieve their goals has stepped up to assist a group of 4th graders achieve theirs. The Smencils (assorted flavored pencils included in the grant) were an especially big hit with the students. They served as a fabulous extrinsic reward to get students to make good choices regarding behavior and homework. As we work on promoting the intrinsic value of working hard in the classroom, extra incentives can really make a difference.

Our students (and their teachers) are amazed at the generosity of a group of people they do not know personally. Seeing your commitment to their education makes them want to work harder to help themselves. You are helping them reach their goals while teaching them the value of sharing and generosity. What a wonderful life lesson!

Thank you again for the selfless support of our classroom. We will continue to use the materials you've provided to help us reach our academic goals. You have really made a difference in the lives of a group of great students!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Eaton

  • Expand Our Listening Center

    Funded Mar 17, 2012

Watching the excitement of my students as we received books for our new Listening Center was one of the great joys of my school year. More than two thirds of our class is reading below grade level, and giving them great books to listen to and practice with will build fluency as it increases their interest in reading and allows them to practice grade level appropriate reading skills. A touch of technology will make the center feel like a reward for all of the students who get to use it.

Thank you for making a difference, for supporting education, for the generous helping hand, and for bringing smiles to the faces of the 32 great kids in our class. pictures will soon be posted so you can really understand what a joy you have brought to our classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Eaton

My class is an upper grade Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classroom. Students with disabilities who receive Integrated Co-Teaching services are educated with age appropriate peers in the general education classroom. My students are diverse, bright, and brimming with potential. They are excited about learning, but many of them have fallen far behind and learning does not always come easy for them. An increased need for repetition makes new content difficult to access. Kinesthetic and visual learning styles make traditional teaching methods less effective. A read aloud, sideshow, and worksheet are rarely engaging enough to make the content stick. All qualify for free or reduced price school lunches, a measure often used to indicate economic status. More than half of the students in the class are more than two full academic years behind in reading, writing, and math.
