Art Therapy classes have been recently added to our curriculum. According to Psychology Today (2018), "Art therapy helps children, adolescents, and adults explore their emotions, improve self-esteem, manage addictions, relieve stress, improve symptoms of anxiety and depression, and cope with a physical illness or disability." Because many of the students in our school have been placed with us as a result of trauma-induced behavioral problems, participating in the art class gives students an opportunity to express themselves in a positive, judgement-free manner. Emphasis is placed on trying new techniques, relaxing, enjoying the process - and maybe even tap into a hidden talent! While the materials purchased will not be used for a single project (we use paints and paper for a multitude of projects), having them stored and easily dispensed will be beneficial to keeping waste to a minimum. With an easier method to dispense rolled paper and paints, students will also be more likely to use the materials in their projects. Our school as a whole would benefit from the paper cutters because teachers would have easier access to the paper for their bulletin boards and classroom projects. Much of my tiny budget gets swallowed up by the essential consumables of an art class, so the additional funds to purchase these items would be greatly appreciated.
