In a classroom of 24 students, which students will learn the most? The answer is twofold: students who feel connected to others and students who find the learning interesting and fun. Because we know that engaged and connected students are students who achieve more, we are always looking for ways to meet the affective needs of the students at our campus and to make learning experiences creative, hands-on, and experiential. This grant seeks to use GPS technology to get students excited about learning across the curriculum, to connect students to caring teachers and other students, and to strengthen the home-school connection through a family-friendly hobby. A Geocaching Club will be just the thing to engage our students, broaden their horizons, and challenge them across the curriculum. Geocaching is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. A geocache is a small container with small trinkets and a log inside. The owner disguises it and hides it somewhere out in nature, posting its coordinates on geocaching.com. Anyone with a GPS unit or phone app can then find the geocache, sign the log, and log the find online. There are thousands of unique geocaches hidden in our area and millions in the world! The beauty of a geocaching club is that students will be reading, writing, doing math calculation, and using science knowledge, all while they are having a great time. Geocaching gives students multiple opportunities to experience learning that is experiential, movement-based, interactive, and technology-based. I'm requesting cardstock, ink, labels, and markers that will allow us to create geocaching journals and fun sticker badges to go in them. The journal is a place to track achievements and write about experiences. Sharing our journal entries helps us become a truly connected community of learning.
