Drumline lessons begin during the daily 50-minute drumline course. All are taught the fundamentals of music education - reading rhythms, proper technique, coordination, rudiments, and creativity. Ensemble repertoire is then introduced on par with students’ current skill levels. It is now time for students to further increase their knowledge and skills through at-home practice. The individual at-home practice will hold students accountable for learning their individual parts on their own time, resulting in a greater final product by focusing on and fine-tuning specific elements of the music. Ultimately, this will foster a sense of responsibility and dedication to the full ensemble from each student. However, the majority of my students are not able to purchase the equipment necessary for effective at-home practice. I’m requesting affordable equipment for my drumline students to take home for a nightly fifteen to twenty-minute practice session Monday through Thursday evenings. The equipment used in this project will expand the meaningful music experiences for my students. In the title of this project, the word success encompasses a few areas. Students will become successful musicians, academics, and adults. The knowledge and skills achieved through drumline participation will develop successful musicians. Further, the critical learning outcomes found within this project are likened to the same critical learning outcomes found when students review and practice math, reading, science, and social studies skills and information as homework assignments. Studies by several music organizations, including NAfME, NAMM, and FMEA have proven that the study of music enhances students' academic potential in numerous ways, including; time management, social-emotional health, school attendance, improved grades and test scores, and graduation rates. Additionally, the life skills, such as; collaboration, openness to feedback, adaptability, perseverance, stage presence, and confidence, realized through music education will aid students in pursuit of careers as they become community leaders.
