My students attend a neighborhood school, that is in one of the lowest income areas in our parish. Many of these students have no life experiences outside of their neighborhoods. When students enter our school, they have no math or literacy background skills. As a result, the early elementary grades focus more on teaching reading, writing, and math. As students begin the fourth-grade, this is the first time that many of them have been exposed to social studies. For those who have had exposure, they find social studies to be dull and their least favorite subject. Teaching deep concepts, or historical thinking skills, is very difficult, because they have no background knowledge. To build the knowledge, my students need hands-on, engaging activities.
