  • Using Art to Support Multilingual Learners' ELA Vocabulary Acquisition

    Funded Dec 29, 2022

Thank you again for your generous donations that ensure access to creative sources such as colored pencils, scissors, glue, tape, and blank books to my multilingual students. I apologize that I did not get better pictures this semester as we used them, but I wanted to share some of the creative pieces they wrote.

These students used the art supplies to share their personal experiences and writing. They wrote their bilingual stories in a colorful fingerprint, illustrating their personal identities that differ just as our fingerprints do. They wrote word collages with adjectives and nouns that describe who they are using words we learned together.

In future years, the books will be where the students gather their personal writing, a way to demonstrate their growth as writers and learners of the English language.

Once again, we appreciate your contributions that have helped my students share who they are.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Lux

  • Catching Up on the Series and Authors They Love

    Funded Mar 16, 2021

I want to express my appreciation, again, for the generous contributions of this grant's donors. Through your dedication to students and appreciation for literature, my students have continued to grow as readers.

I have been able to encourage my students to read and keep reading through the use of book series. I have been able to place in my students' hands novels with characters who physically and culturally resemble them. Many students have checked out more than one book, and a few go through one or two books a week. They love that the books don't look the same. They love that the books present the same themes from different perspectives. They love talking about their books with their classmates and teacher.

I have two students, in particular, who check out at least two books a week. Your donations helped them read through multiple series this semester. Their excitement encouraged other students to read more books, too.

It is for students like them and the others who cannot get enough of these books that I send my heartfelt thanks. We appreciate your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Lux

When I first got the books in Spring of 2020, my student who had read Zoraida Cordova's Labyrinth Lost quickly snagged Bruja Born to read and would have read my copy of Wayward Witch, but the school year ended.

It is for students like him and the others who cannot get enough of these books that I send my heartfelt thanks. We appreciate your support.”

  • Diverse Books for Unimpressed or Reluctant Readers

    Funded Dec 17, 2020

Once again, I cannot thank you enough for your generous donations to my classroom library. When this school year began, I did not think I would be able to place actual books into the hands of my students. Now that it's the end of the year, many students have read four, five, and sometimes six of the books in my classroom library!

My students have loved exploring the worlds written by these phenomenal authors. From the streets of New York City to outer space. From a small town outside of Chicago to a futuristic countryside. My students laughed, cried, grew infuriated, and loved alongside the characters of these novels. Many of them told me they couldn't remember the last time they read an entire novel, or even enjoyed an entire novel, on their own. This is why I strive to update my classroom library on a regular basis. And that is something I cannot do without your help.

Once again, my personal thanks does not cover what you have done for my students. We all thank you for your generosity and compassion for the students.”

  • Maximizing Student Voice Using Technology

    Funded Oct 14, 2019

Thank you so much for providing my students with computer styluses and headphones, especially the headphones with microphones. My students enjoyed having the opportunity to record their booktalks without the excess background noise (unfortunately, I did not have my camera at that moment and then our big technology-based project was postponed and then canceled due to school closures). I'm looking forward to sharing these tools with my future students as we delve into inquiry projects, share our book likes, engage in in-classroom asynchronous learning, and more. Thank you again for helping bring these tools into the classroom.”

  • Spanish Novels for my Spanish Speaking Students

    Funded Aug 30, 2019

I cannot thank you enough for the joy you have brought my ESOL students this semester. I have had three students, in particular, who have struggled to read the English novels offered in my classroom, and their grades would have suffered if I required them to read just those texts.

Instead of reading novels in English, the students read novels like La Reina Roja, Bajo La Misma Estrella, and Alguien Esta Mintiendo. All three of these novels have English companions in my classroom library, so we were able to pair these students with others who read the same novel in English. They then worked together to identify different elements of the novel, discuss real world connections, and move forward with their learning of the English language (or Spanish for those students who speak English).

Once again, thank you so much for helping these students have a successful semester. I'm looking forward to continuing to share these books with my students for years to come.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Lux

  • Curl up with a Good Book!

    Funded Dec 3, 2019

Thank you so much for your amazingly generous donations! I am so excited to be adding these wonderful books to my classroom library and continuing to share the love of reading with my students. I just shared with them the joyful news! Thank you again for helping us curl up with a good book this winter!”

  • Flexible Seating to Improve the Learning Environment

    Funded Feb 28, 2019

I wanted to thank you, again, for your generous donations that provided my students with additional flexible seating options. From the day I removed the chairs and tables from the boxes to these last few days in my classroom, these seating options are a class favorite. The students loved being able to get some extra energy out using the LuxFit seats. Others appreciated having a small table to use when they sat on the floor in the bean bags or saucer chair. The standing tables especially proved useful during group discussions because the different levels allowed students to sit or stand and still have their materials at an accessible height. Thank you, from all of us in the Lux classroom!”

  • Curl Up With a Good Book!

    Funded Oct 18, 2017

My students are reading! Excitedly! So many have complimented my selection of books, and I have YOU to thank! They have willingly taken every opportunity to read these books on their own time. Even my reluctant readers have snagged a few of the books you helped to purchase. My regular readers have really talked up some of the books, like Turtles All the Way Down, and now I have a hard time keeping it on my shelf!

If not for your generous contributions to our project, they would not have had these opportunities. Thank you so much, again, for helping us put books into the hands of my students.”

  • Making My Room Inviting

    Funded Jun 28, 2017

Thank you so much for helping us fund this project and purchase inspirational posters, book displays, and resources for our learning environment. As you can see from the pictures, my students have thoroughly enjoyed using the recently re-stuffed bean bags and the inspirational posters. Their excitement was obvious from the moment they walked in the door and commented on how colorful and inviting my room looked. Many of my students classroom learning habits have improved since I have been able to bring back out the bean bags, and they often comment how they are more comfortable and "at home" in my classroom. The books on display are often the first books to be checked out because they are so visible. I can't wait to continue adding more seating, decorations, and books to my classroom.

Thank you again from all of us in the Lux classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Lux

Statistics have proved that without earning at least four credits during the 9th grade year, a young person is more likely to drop out of high school before reaching the 11th grade year. One reason these young people do not succeed in high school is because of their struggle to read anything placed in front of them. For the past thirteen years, I have had the opportunity to work with many students who fit this criteria. They read on or below the 6th grade reading level. Many are male. By finding books intriguing to male students, many who would typically drop out of school have found themselves set to graduate on time. They have become more confident in themselves and in their school work. Unfortunately, students' interests change each year. With our current budget crunches, constant updates to my classroom library isn't possible. I am thankful to all the donors who help these men and women succeed.
