Learning about Computer Science with an iPad
Funded Jun 16, 2019Words cannot express how thankful I am for your support. Ipad has been a great way to get students engaged in learning. For many of them, computer science is their favorite part of the day. I have one student with a disability who has struggled with math over the course of the school year. This has caused him to be frustrated by math tasks and he generally avoids math, however when I incorporated the use of the iPads and robots into math lessons he became much more eager to learn.
Thank you for your donation!”

Funded May 24, 2019Ipad has been a great way to get students engaged in learning. In math, some students have been struggling with understanding that fractions are less than one. Students were able to use the iPad to draw out various models on the iPads, use digital math manipulates and watch teaching videos of fractions to help them better understand the concept.
My 5th grade students are reluctant to complete academic task at times. However, the use of iPads and robots was one way I was able to motivate students with students in math. Students were excited to complete the math computation so that they can use the iPad and robot to write an algorithm to check their math work with their partner. This gave students an opportunity for discussion with peers and collaborate with each other to problem solver. They were not afraid to make mistakes as they knew they could always "debug" with the help of their peers.
One of my student has a hard time working with others. He is very talented and has a lot to say but struggles when it comes to working and collaborating with his peers. Throughout the year, when given a choice to work alone or with others, he has always worked alone. However, through the incorporation of iPads and robots, he was willing to work with others and notice that there is not always one algorithm (answer) to write a program.
Thank you for your donation and giving me the opportunity to encourage and engage my students.”

Funded May 22, 2019Ipad has been a great way to get students engaged in learning. For example, for social studies, we are learning and Dominican Republic and students have many questions about what it is like to live in Dominican Republic. Students were able to use Google to search images and look at street views of places in Dominican Republic to help them have a better understanding of the country.
My students who are at times disengaged or reluctant to complete academic tasks, find using the iPads and robots to be very engaging. For many of them, computer science is their favorite part of the day. I have one student with a disability who has struggled with math over the course of the school year. This has caused him to be frustrated by math tasks and he generally avoids math, however when I incorporated the use of the iPads and robots into math lessons he became much more eager to learn.
As a result of my computer science lessons, this student has been talking about careers in computer science, but prior to introducing computer science this student aimed to find the career with as little schooling required as possible. I have another student who is frustrated by working with his peers. This student excels in math however he avoids all group work. Earlier in the school year, he would refuse to participate in group discussions or would end up arguing with group members. However, with the introduction of computer science, this student now feels working with his peers is worth the effort due to his desire to use the iPads and robots.
