I teach sixth grade math in a high poverty middle school. Students face many challenges whether social, personal, economic, or educational. I promote building a relationships among students. We learn to depend on and support each other through the use of hands-on learning and projects. Hands-on learning is more expensive and time consuming, but it is so worth it when I see the success of my students.
With the implosion of electronics, students have lost a big part of what it is to actually produce a hands-on project. While I am a techno-charged teacher, students must have a foundational and conceptual understanding mathematics.
