My students are already in the habit of taking good care of science supplies. Since we looped from the 3rd grade, we need 4th-grade materials for science as we currently do not have a curriculum. 75% of my students are below grade level in reading. These books, paired with hands-on lessons in making actual electric circuits using D batteries, wire, switches, and other electrical parts, exploring sound and light waves using tuning forks and prisms, working outside with classmates in the garden to learn about plants, and investigating rocks will improve reading comprehension and bring my students together. We have already made some examples of mold fossils and cast fossils in class using things that were laying around like modeling clay and glue. 100% of students could write notes to their parents telling them about what they learned so far which is evidence that their learning improves when they do hands-on activities paired with “just right” reading material. I hope that they will get this project funded so they can continue to accelerate in the learning of science topics and concepts as well as improve in their reading comprehension while working cohesively in their small groups.
