Engaging in a shared reading experience as they tackle Acevedo's text, The Poet X, while at the same time creating their own original poetry, will make for a rich authorship experience for my 6th graders!
As middle schoolers, my students need to build their confidence as young and empowered authors whose words matter. Reading a story created by just such an author will model for them how they might do this to create their own narratives in poetic form. As they read this shared text together, they can explore how figurative language can bring their individual neighborhoods alive for their classmates, even during distance learning.
