My students attend first grade at a public school in Jamaica, New York. Most of them have immigrant parents who came here to work hard and provide for their children. They emphasize the importance of a proper education. The parents ensure food, clothes and shelter and rely on our public schools to provide the rest. Virtually all of our students are eligible for free lunch. As a teacher, I offer the best learning opportunities that I can for them, but supplies are limited due to financial constraints. My students are a very friendly, caring and considerate group. I was very pleased the other day to hear from a teacher who sometimes works with my class how friendly, nice and helpful they are to each other, a rarity at my school. They are an absolute pleasure to work with.
