Let East Harlem Actors Be Heard!
Funded Jul 22, 2009I can't tell you how much it will mean to my students and myself to be able to use these headset microphones in our production of The Laramie Project by Moises Kaufman this coming March. The faux-documentary style of the piece really requires students to speak in a conversational manner, something they'll be able to do with electronically amplified voices.
This play is about hope, understanding, community, and love. I truly don't believe students are exposed to conversations about these essential components of life often enough. In an age of test data and business-model educational practices, my students need the support of people like you to become the people we want running our world in the coming years.
Thank you so much for what you've done. It will never be forgotten.”

Mortals, Be Not Fools! Give My Students Shakespeare!
Funded Dec 7, 2008I am absolutely thrilled that this project has been funded! My students are just now working on a literary analysis of Hamlet, and many are saying that they "liked Romeo and Juliet better"--as if these were the only two plays he wrote! I can't wait to expose them to a Shakespearean comedy. I know they're going to be so excited by Bottom and the rude mechanicals, among other things. Now, hopefully, they'll stop asking questions like, "Why do all the characters die in Shakespeare's plays?" Thank you again, a million times over”

Establishing Literacy In Film And Media Studies
Funded Sep 23, 2008I cannot tell you how grateful I am for your heartfelt contribution. My head is jam-packed with ideas on how to incorporate video clips into the work that I'm already doing. First on the agenda: a critical look at the film version of Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. I know my students will walk away with a lasting impression of that text now. I am, and they are, forever indebted to you”

American Born Chinese: A Graphic Novel
Funded Aug 23, 2008I want to extend my sincere and heart-felt thanks to all of the donors. When I read American Born Chinese, my eyes were filled with tears. It is a beautiful, insightful, and often amusing glimpse into the life of anyone who's ever felt isolated or marginalized. I know that my students, regardless of their ethnicity, will be incredibly moved by this text. Your kindness and generosity will affect my students in a profound and life-changing way”

Bildungsroman from a Chicano/a Perspective
Funded Aug 12, 2008Thanks so much to all of the parents who contributed to the funding of this project. I am very excited to use this novel in an effort to expand the points of view that your child is exposed to within a particular kind of novel: the Bildungsroman, or coming of age story. I will use Bless Me, Ultima as a companion piece to both The Catcher in the Rye and The Bluest Eye. My appreciation cannot be properly articulated--thank you so, so much! I can't wait for your children to share with you the classroom experiences that the study of this novel will yield”

Frederick Douglass: An Introduction to Black Narratives
Funded Jan 15, 2008To all who have funded a part of this project, I want to extend a most emphatic THANK YOU! I cannot believe it only took two weeks. Because of this extraordinary generosity, I will be able to teach this unit during the current school year. I am so thankful for the support of the parents at Manhattan East--nothing I do could be accomplished without you! Thank you, truly, for everything you've done. This will now be the next book we study after Lord of the Flies. Thank you thank you thank you.
