  • Building Our Future: Constructing Computers

    Funded Sep 14, 2016

Thank you for helping our class raise money for all of our new computer parts. We have been learning about the different parts of the computer, what they do, and how they are put together. Soon we will begin building super computers that we will use in the classroom to make a visual art station and an audio recording station. These computers are going to help us do more projects during the rest of the school year and we should still be able to use them again next year too!

Without your generous donation, we would not be able to do these cool projects. You are appreciated. Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Gianniny

  • Sound Reasoning

    Funded Mar 9, 2016

Thanks for donating to our class so we can get new speakers. We are using the speakers for our music and to hear the videos and games that we use on the SmartBoard. The sound is really nice and it is a big improvement from what we had before. We are excited to produce more of our own music next year and listen to it using these speakers. It is really cool to know that we made that music. I think that we are going to do the recording project a little later in the year because we have a lot to learn first.

    Thank you for your generosity!”

    Mr. Gianniny

  • Visual Storytelling With Tech!

    Funded Mar 9, 2016

Thank you for your help with our project. We are going to be using our new graphic tablets to learn about illustration and animation. One project that we are going to do this year is making a comic book in class. First we have to plan our story and prepare a draft of all the drawings and the panels. Then we are going to draw all of the pictures using a program on the computer and at the end we get to print our comic books so that we can keep them. This project is exciting because we get to make our own books and take them home. We are going to start the project in the fall.

    Thanks again for your help!”

    Mr. Gianniny

  • DJ's & Divas

    Funded Dec 30, 2015

To all those generous folks out there,

Thank you so much for donating to our project, "DJ's and Divas!" We are very excited about the audio equipment that we now have in class and are looking forward to putting it to use in the near future. We now have microphones, a digital piano, turntables, an electronic drum kit, a digital/acoustic guitar and an interface that allows us to put these all together and edit our productions using the application, Garageband. We only have one month of school left, so we are looking forward to using the audio equipment to have some fun!

Thank you again for your help in getting these great tools for our classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Gianniny

  • Life in Color

    Funded Dec 10, 2015

Thank you so much for contributing toward our large format color printer! We used it during the winter to print out green screen images that we worked together to create in class and next year we are going to use the printer to make a gallery show of our photographs. Our old printer did not make very good prints and it could only do black and white. With the new printer, we are able to show other people all of the details of the work that we are doing with high definition, color and everything. Thank you again for your support!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Gianniny

  • Robotic Reasoning

    Funded Feb 23, 2016

Thank you for helping us buy our new Arduino Uno boards and all of the components that we need to begin making electronic devices. We just recently began learning how to use the boards and soon we will present our projects to other schools when we enter the STEM fair at the Museum of Natural History. This is a big opportunity for us and we are excited to show off what we have learned. This is the first time that we got to program our own computers and make robotic devices. Thank you again for helping us!”

  • Drumming to a Different Beat

    Funded Dec 10, 2015

Thank you so much for your contributions that have allowed us to have a digital drum set in our technology classroom! Now we can play the drums and use our new set to record beats that we are going to use when we make music videos. Some of us play drums in church and outside of school, so now we can practice in school too! Along with our digital keyboard, microphones and guitar, it feels like we have a full recording studio. We can learn a lot from our new instruments and we are going to have a lot of fun too. Thank you again for all of your support!”

  • The Sound of My Success

    Funded Nov 18, 2015

Thank you so much for giving us access to a piano in our classroom. It has been an amazing gift for us to be able to use this instrument to develop musical motivations in our students in a variety of ways. We have tied the piano into a digital interface to begin recording music and playing with new sounds. Some students have begun learning how to play by ear as well as through more traditional instructional methods. Others have been drawn to the instrument as a cathartic activity during their busy school day schedule. It is exciting to have such a useful tool in our classroom and we will be utilizing it more as the year moves forward.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Gianniny

  • We Want to Know How to Arduino

    Funded Nov 11, 2015

Thank you very much for your generous contribution that has allowed us to try out basic physical coding in our classroom. Students are just beginning to work with the Arduino to develop systems that they will present at the annual STEM fair that is quickly approaching. Students have started learning to code with HTML and CSS. After developing a basic understanding of code as it relates to web development, students now have the opportunity to work with Objective-C and the Arduino interface to begin applying these concepts to physical applications.

Thank you again for allowing us to have this opportunity, as many students have not had exposure to such technical learning opportunities before. It is really providing an incredibly useful hands-on experience for all of our kids.”

  • Photographic Minds

    Funded Nov 2, 2015

Thank you again for your support! We have already gotten a lot of use out of the cameras that you helped us to acquire for our classroom. We have used the cameras to document work and hands-on projects that we are completing throughout the year. In addition, we have had a couple of photography based projects over the past few months and the students really enjoyed them. We did a comparison between film photography and digital photography using student portraits as the subjects for comparison. We recently completed a green screen project where students were able to superimpose themselves into settings and scenarios of their choice using the Fujifilm cameras in combination with Google's 'Pixlr' editing software. Without these resources, our classroom environment, culture and even the activities in which we are capable of engaging during the year would look very different. Thank you very much for allowing us to have these opportunities. On behalf of my students and myself, thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Gianniny

I teach technology at a middle school in downtown Brooklyn, NY. The students who attend our school have all been classified as having "emotional disturbance" or "autism" and generally thrive in a setting with a great deal of structure and routine. My objective is to empower my students to see the opportunities that they are all capable of making for themselves. I also hope to provide the tools that my students need to be as independently successful in areas that are motivating to them. We work to our strengths and build upon our weaknesses to better prepare ourselves for an independent and self-reliant, albeit collaborative future.
