  • The More We Run, The Bigger our Smile

    Funded Feb 3, 2022

We are extremely grateful for your generosity. Our students were extremely happy to receive a brand new treadmill. More students will now be able to participate in our fitness club. It is important for our students to recognize the importance of being healthy. Students now have a real feel as to what its like to visit a gym and how to safely operate equipment. Our goal is to promote life long learning and to inspire students to be healthy always, not just when in school. Running on a treadmill will increase stamina, strength and improve overall heart health.

You have changed the lives our our students forever.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Rodriguez

  • Spinning is Winning

    Funded Oct 7, 2021

Thank you so much for your support! Our students love their new spin bike. They were shocked! It has allowed students to be self driven and motivated to exercise. It is something simple yet exciting that they can do on their own. Creating a gym-like environment is something that I wanted to introduce to our students. It is vital for them to continue improving their health long after they graduate from our program. We now have three spin bikes and one treadmill. Our next step is to obtain equipment that focuses on improving strength.

Please continue to support our students physical education program! You have changed their lives forever!”

    Mr. Rodriguez

  • 2 Screens = 2wice the Learning!

    Funded Dec 10, 2020

Words cannot describe the difference this extra monitor has made for our students! Students are much more engaged because they can see! This large bright screen has allowed all students in the gym to participate with confidence. Students have shown improvement in numerous areas like social skills. Also do to the countless features like built in wifi and airplay, plenty of time has been saved and I have been able to provide more time for instruction. This large second screen is the bridge we desperately needed to connect students who are in person and students who are fully remote.

Thank you once again! You have made a huge impact in our student's experience and learning!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Rodriguez

  • Help us Run into 2021!

    Funded Nov 23, 2020

Our students have definitely gone the distance! We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Due to your generous donations, our school was able to acquire an amazing treadmill that provides an enormous impact on our community. Our students are eager to come to physical education class to exercise. Our students are becoming more independent and are enjoying the process of improving their physical fitness.

When they first saw the treadmill, they were as quiet as ever. They wanted to hear every word I had to say on how to use this new equipment. This was not only great for them, but it inspired me to continue to improve the quality of their physical education resources.”

    With gratitude,

  • Put Some Pep in Our Steps!

    Funded Nov 4, 2019

Our student athletes are thrilled! Every class they are eager to grab the pedometers and get moving. We have created a google spreadsheet where we are live tracking data! Students are able to compare steps taken, distance traveled and calories burned between each practice. Combined with the incentives that the New York Road Runners provides, are students are extremely motivated. We have seen tremendous growth in stamina, grit and resilience. Our next step is to motivate students to continue moving outside of school. In partnership with parents, we would allow the pedometers to travel home for the weekend.”

    Mr. Rodriguez

  • Summer 2020, Here We Come!

    Funded Oct 8, 2019

We can't get our students off the spin bikes! Our students are building mental and physical toughness with the use of this spin bike! Students are understanding how spinning is one of the best exercises for heart health. Students are performing anaerobic exercise, learning to pull energy from reserves and building up muscular endurance over an extended timeframe. Students are also learning to work on controlled breathing. This has helped with anxiety. Our students have begun to get the real feel of a gym and have learned how to use different equipment. All they're missing is a gym id card!”

  • Building a Tech Gym! Part 2

    Funded Oct 24, 2019

The Nintendo Switch software: Ring Fit Adventure, has been a revolution in my class! My students love the new addition of our tech gym. The interactive game has them doing all types of exercises such as squats, abdominal twist, biceps curls, and more! It's a complete body workout in a fun delivery. Technology really is the new education tool that is vital in reaching our students and engaging them to be life long learners. Physical Education is no different. So far because of generous donors like you, we have acquired the Nintendo Switch with fitness games such as just dance, fitness boxing, sports party, and now ring fit adventure. We have also obtained digital pedometers along with a spin bike to work on cardiovascular endurance. All of this through donors choose. Our next tech goal may possibly be mini ipads to take advantage of the hundreds of fitness apps Apple has to offer.”

    Mr. Rodriguez

  • Technology + Special Needs = Win!

    Funded Aug 10, 2019

What an amazing experience for our school so far! I have reached many students who typically are not motivated to be active. Many students who are into video games but not sports have realized that you can do both!

So far, the big hit has been the game : "Just Dance". All of the students are competing so hard to win the dance challenge that they don't even notice how drenched of sweat they are by the end of class.

Students are coming into gym everyday and are eager to get started! It's phenomenal how this technology has impacted so many young individuals to aspire to be active. They understand that being active correlates with being happy and mentally and physically sound.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Rodriguez

Teaching students with special needs is all about adapting our materials to engage and allow for learning to transpire. In adapted physical education class, our students rotate in stations that incorporate fitness skills and exercise such as cycling, yoga, hand-eye coordination, loco-motor and fine-motor skills. What a difference it would be if one of those stations could be a technology based fitness station. The Nintendo Switch has multiple games that engage students in exercise in a fun and interactive way! Fitness games such as "Just Dance" and "Sports Party" can be the bridge that connects healthy life styles and leisure activities. Two of our student's most difficult challenges are positive social interactions and being physically active. The interactive activity games provide our students an opportunity to grow exponentially in both areas. Exergames for physical education courses provides physical, social, and cognitive benefits. Exergames are enjoyable tools that increase energy expenditure during play, motivate players to become more physically active, promote social interaction, and enhance cognitive performance.
