  • The Sound of Success!

    Funded Mar 30, 2017

The headphones in our classroom have made centers time so much more manageable! They have made it so I can have a group of students on the computer and a group on the tablets working on Smarty Ants while the rest of the class is working on other more active centers. The students are all able to hear their specific instruction without interruption. I cannot express the importance or difference this has made with my students learning! The students love being able to focus on their "games" and being able to hear!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hartzog

  • Nabi Time! Learning digitally Is Fun!

    Funded Dec 16, 2016

Having Nabi's in the classroom has been a wonderful gift of technology! My students have been able to use programs more frequently to expand their reading practice. I am required for students to use a program between 2 and 4 hours a week. The addition of the Nabi has increased our success reaching those individual goals significantly. I am now able to put 10 students at a time on the program, that is double what I could do before!

I have several students ask me to let them on the Nabi to "play" as a reward or break from "work." My students work diligently, so when they ask for a break, I usually say yes. The best part of that is I can allow for a break/playtime and they are still learning! With the Nabi I was able to choose what activities and websites students have access to! I also use the Nabi as a reward for behaviorally challenged friends. I get my work, they get Nabi time (again, they are STILL learning!!). The students love the games and websites I allow them to use, they are learning, and working at better behavior. It is a win-win!

Some of my students have full access to technology at home, while others have absolutely none. Getting the Nabi tablets gave my no technology students access to further their technological knowledge and experience. This is a vital skill in the world today. It is another way for me to give them new experiences and develop a technology foundation in first grade. We are blessed to have received the Nabi's and are sincerely grateful to each person/company that contributed.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hartzog

  • Mrs. Hartzog said, "I Need a Book!"

    Funded Aug 22, 2015

The majority of my class began the school year not reading at all. I used many of the texts that we received to model character, setting, and key details. The students were able to see sentence structure in many situations that apply to writing. We focused on the right way to use verbs (tense is an challenge!), nouns, and adjectives. I loved being able to show students how rich an adjective and adverb can make a sentence sound. These texts had a significant impact on skills and comprehension!!

Once the students started to read, I began letting them take the "real" books and reading them. The books we received got a special shelf in the library and students always go to that shelf first, not because I told them to, because they LOVE the text! They read the books over and over sometimes by themselves, other times with a friend or two! It is beautiful watching them read!

I don't believe I have any one student who has enjoyed the books over another. That is the beauty in this particular selection of books, they ALL love them! It has been amazing to see how they gravitate towards these books over others, share with each other and with me their enjoyment over what they find, see, and read. Receiving these books have been a blessing and we thank all who contributed to make it happen for us!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hartzog

I teach in a Title I school where 100% of the school is on free lunch. My students live in a high poverty area. Access to literacy begins and ends within the school walls. There are many things they will never be able to experience in real life that a book can offer. Please help me expose them to as many experiences as I can.
