Math Me Down
Funded Oct 28, 2021Last year, my students were able to utilize all the manipulatives that were purchased to support their understanding with the Math content. They were able to work in groups, pairs or just by themselves. They utilized the materials to subtract and add both two and three digit numbers. They played various math games that made learning the content, enjoyable.
Parents provided feedback about their child not feeling as frustrated at home while completing math problems because of what they took away during instruction time.”

Funded Oct 21, 2021I work within a Title 1 school that is about 68% Hispanic and the rest are African American students. Many of the books that are found within classroom libraries do not reflect the population. How can we teach our children to be the best that they can be if there is no resources showing them what that can actually look like?
My students choose 5 new books every Friday. They also utilize Epic books online to self indulge in reading. Thank you for adding these books to their mental storage collection.”

Funded Aug 22, 2021My students love the books that we were able to get with your donations. There are so many different reading levels within my class. My students have been able to book shop and pick books that are on the level of their understanding without feeling embarrassed reading books that they do not quite understand.
Reading is done on both the independent level, where they can book shop for 5 books a week and get lost in them. They are able to sit at a table where there is a lamp and read for 20 mins to themselves. Reading is also done with me when we are in small groups. I have them complete close reading to support them with becoming familiar with unknown words. The math magazines that I requested provides them with the ability to complete various tasks that were previously taught in class. The math magazines covers standards that are found within my lesson. This supports with extra practice needed for retainment.
There are definitely students that are especially enjoying their new books. They are excited that they can read them without stopping and asking for help. They love the pictures of the books as well. They pose questions after they read so that I can help with anything that they may not have understood. I love hearing about what they loved about the books. Many of my students struggle with Math, but it is still a subject that they enjoy learning about.”

Funded Aug 28, 2018My 5th graders and I are so very grateful to have our request met. We utilized our donation to review specific math content to support the ability to pass the Fractions Unit Assessment and the Math Common Assessment.
The items donated were setup as stations. They utilized them in November. They rotated every 15 or 20 mins. They used them for trivia, math game show, applying them along with note taking or individual self teaching of areas where they identified their weaknesses.
Initially when I showed them our box, they were thrilled. They wanted me to open it immediately and they passed around all the items. They asked many questions surrounding when we would be utilizing it and who gave it to us. I explained to them about signing up for the items and having to wait for a donor. They asked if we would be able to do it again. I told them maybe..lol. They really loved using the various manipulatives to review for the Assessment. They stated that they didn't feel like they were in school because it felt like they were having too much fun. I loved watching their interaction because it made me understand that reaching out for support was all worth it.
The next steps is to create a Math Bowl utilizing 4th and 5th graders. I spoke to the Math Facilitator at my school and she has agreed to help me so that we can hold it before Spring Break in April. I believe that I have strengthened my students in the area of looking Math more now than ever. I've seen confidence grow and self esteem rise. The Math Bowl will be held before EOG's and it should help them understand just how much they have truly grown since 3rd and 4th grade .”
