Currently, I am leading my school in play-based kindergarten as it is so important in early childhood. We do not have any dramatic play or blocks in our classroom. As said before, many of my students come from homes where Somali is most likely their first language and everyone qualifies for free and reduced lunch. That means a majority of our families are english language learners and may not make a lot of money. Their parents immigrated or sought refuge from the war in Somalia to the Twin Cities. Play fosters language development, social skills, emotional regulation and fine and gross motor skills among many others. The kitchen materials (food, table and chairs, Clothes hanger) will help my students with: Problem solving, identifying emotions and emotional regulation, fine and gross motor skills, language skills, and their imagination. The block area will help my students with: social emotional skills, motor skills, problem solving, symbolic thinking, and math concepts. We will use these materials within the curriculum whenever I can incorporate them into our reading and math lessons. We will also have 45 minutes of uninterrupted play time to use these intentionally placed play-centers. I really appreciate your generosity! I and my students couldn’t do it without you! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
