Traveling to Experience Architecture, Engineering and Culture Around the World
Funded Jan 1, 2019It is with sincere gratitude that I write to tell you about the impact of your donation to our travelers. The trip was fantastic and filled with educational, cultural and social experiences. We visited many locations while in Athens and visited so much more while on the cruise to the various islands. One of the highlights of the trip was visiting the Acropolis in Athens. In addition, they were extremely excited about visiting Santorini to experience the unique architecture and learn about the reasons for the designs. Our students all agreed that they would have never thought that they would be visiting these places. Upon our return, our travelers now have a greater appreciation for Architecture, travel and are now even more open-minded about meeting people, forming new bonds and experiencing a new culture. This has led to very unique discussions in the classrooms whereas they are now advocating for travel. They are also now expressing a higher knowledge of Greek Architecture along with the ancient practices that have helped to develop many of our present cultural activities. Thank you again for your donation.”

Cordless Drills for Future Engineers
Funded Apr 1, 2015the student's reaction to receiving the cordless drills was at first curiosity then it turned to "when do I get to use that?" Some students have never used a cordless drill. They really got excited and started to explore the possibilities. Some of the students actually started using it almost immediately as they were delivered. The wonderful thing about the cordless drills, for an Engineering class, is that the ability to fashion ideas into reality has hooked the students.
In our Introduction to Engineering Design and Civil Engineering and Architecture class, we are using the tools to teach basic work with power tools. The students will learn how to safely use a cordless drill to do various tasks. These skills will allow them to fabricate their solution to a problem and make it aesthetically pleasing. The cordless drills have added a more hands-on component that has captured student's interest, which have been traditionally unsuccessful in the typical classroom settings. I feel that the tools have the capabilities to greatly enhance the designing and construction capabilities of my advanced students but consequently engage my lower third students.
Across the board I have noticed an increase on time on task and a decrease in time spent redirecting or on classroom management. I have some students that have prior knowledge of using power drills that have been mentoring other students and ensuring that safety procedures are followed. The cordless drills have created a sense of excitement about the class that has students feeling like they are getting something that is useful. That feeling is exactly the reward that I was looking for when I decided to bring cordless drills into my classroom.”
