Lego Mindstroms, Problem Solving in the Classroom
Funded May 7, 2014Thank you so much for your generous support of our project, Lego Mindstroms, Problem Solving in the Classroom. This has been such a fun project to implement. My students are working together in new ways and they are able to apply their learning to real life situations. My favorite part has been watching new students take on leadership roles. These students are coming to class excited about sharing information with their group that they have researched at home. They have new design ideas to try, and they are learning the true meaning of trial and error. We appreciate your support of the arts and inquiry based learning in the classroom!”

How Cool! Legos in School!
Funded Mar 13, 2014We are so excited to be able to use the materials from this project in our classroom. The Lego Mindstroms kit gives students a whole new way to connect with the curriculum. My students must apply what we are learning in Math and Science and tie it all together to create a successful robot. They are able to try new things and test new ideas. If their idea doesn't work, they must problem solve in order to find a way to make it work. I am so thrilled that you have provided this opportunity for my students. Thank you!”

Flipping Over Math!
Funded Oct 29, 2013Flipping Over Math has given the gift of time and content mastery in my math class. The I Pad donated to our class has allowed me to record my math lessons in video form, so students can access them from virtually anywhere. They have taken control of their own learning and go at their own pace. The videos are uploaded to our class website so students can view them from home before the lesson is given in class. It allows students to replay the lectures as many times as they need giving students the time they need to process the lesson, so they come to school prepared to ask the questions they need answered. Thus, allowing me to spend more one on one time with students questions.
Our next step is to have the students demonstrate their learning by using the video features on the IPad to create their own instructional videos. The students are learning from each other as well as mastering the content. After all, the best test of whether or not you really understand a concept is trying to teach it to someone else. Teaching calls for complete understanding of the concept.
Students love being able to go at their own pace. It makes them feel more comfortable and confident in class discussions. They enjoy making the videos for their peers. The class likes watching the videos their classmates have made and enjoy learning new ways to solve problems. The use of the technology is new and exciting for them. We appreciate the donation that Chevron has given us and hope to continue to find new ways to use and apply the technology.”
