My students are the youngest group in a rural middle/high school complex. (Okay, some would argue that all of Maine is rural, but we're talking more moose than humans here!) The teachers are staff are dedicated to seeing that all children are fed, clothed, cared for, and yes, even educated, every day. The poverty rate in this area is particularly high, but the children are as bright and promising as children everywhere, all over the world. The stories my children write are often filled with hunting and fishing adventures, tales of snowmobile trips and ATV mishaps -- they write what they know! They also love to read stories of hunting and survival from Gary Paulsen and stories about kids who have overcome adversity, like many of them must do every day, and stories that take them to a world of fantasy where Warrior Cats rule the world and where magic is a way of life.
