Captivating Readers
Funded Dec 2, 2012Your donations have contributed to a rich literary community on our campus this school year. The books that you donated to our classroom have passed through the hands of many curious adolescents, some of whom have only discovered this year that they are readers. My students have encountered stories that resonate with them, words they can understand, authors who pique their interests. Many of my students have exclaimed, "I've read more books this year than I ever have in my life!" Your gift has fueled their independent reading, and they are becoming insightful, inquisitive young adults before my very eyes.
During reader's workshop this year, I have been able to connect students with books that empower them as learners, books that they didn't know existed. I have used these books to help them construct comprehension strategies across a variety of genres, ones that they can always use to make meaning with texts. We have used our books as mentor texts for our writing and to discuss social issues in the world--how we might negotiate these issues as we affect positive changes in our communities. My students are engaging in their books with an interest that, in many cases, began to flourish only this school year. They are increasingly understanding that books open another world for them, both literally and figuratively.
Furthermore, you have made it possible for my multilingual students and special needs students to have greater access to literature. I am able to help them consider texts that speak to their language abilities but still challenge them. I have "caught" them engaging in books, hands propped under chins, brows furrowed, as texts pulled them into thoughtfulness--even as they proclaimed they "didn't like to read."
Thank you for making this kind of classroom experience possible. You did not just give us the gift of books, but the opportunity to love books--to see a world beyond a page. And you showed my kids that, yes, this world is open to them, too; it belongs to them, and they have the power to make it better.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Beck
Becoming Readers
Funded Sep 29, 2011Thank you so much for supporting the work in our classroom this fall semester. Your generous donations have contributed to a rich, enthusiastic learning environment. The books that you donated to our classroom were eagerly devoured by young readers. No matter their reading abilities, my students have encountered stories that resonate with them, words they can understand, authors who pique their interests. Your gift has fueled their independent reading, and they are becoming motivated young learners in a literate community. Every student has the opportunity to be a reader in this environment, thanks to you.
During reader's workshop this semester, I have been able to connect students with books that empower them as learners. I have used these books to help them form comprehension strategies across a variety of genres, ones that they can always use to make meaning with texts. My students are beginning to understand the kinds of readers they are--poetry readers, graphic novel readers, information fiends, fantasy junkies.
Thank you for making this kind of classroom experience a reality. You did not just give us the gift of books, but the opportunity to love books--to see a world beyond a page. You have expanded a world that is often difficult for my kids, and you have made other opportunities possible. My students are smarter and more insightful because of you.”

This semester, in addition to reader's workshop, we have used our books as mentor texts for our writing. I have been able to connect students with exquisite picture books to aid in their understanding of text and to empower them as readers. My students are engaging in their books with an interest that, in many cases, began to flourish only this fall. They are beginning to understand that books open another world for them, both literally and figuratively.
