Nestled at the base of the beautiful Rocky Mountains sits a culturally rich, academically challenging high school in major need. Our students are some of the most incredible kids I have every known. Though they struggle with poverty and are considered "academically challenging," our kids consistently prove that they are more than statistics. Every quarter, we read a novel outside of class. The problem is, the ESL students that I teach are having a hard time engaging in materials that are not culturally rich and relevant to struggles that they might experience in their own lives. While exposing them to the great Caesar and Hamlet inside the classroom, I would love the opportunity to see them enjoy a narrative with themes of love, loyalty, brotherhood, family, betrayal, and redemption that is incredibly captivating for their secondary reading material each quarter. Who knows? It might be the first book some of them actually complete from beginning to end. And that's a very special thing.
