Scanner for Book Making
Funded Jul 13, 2010Thank you for the new scanner for our school. One of our favorite projects we work on in our class is publishing books. We publish individual books and a class book. In the past we would use a computer program to illustrate our books. It was not possible to use the student's original work. Now with the scanner we can scan the original art of the students and electronically paste it in their stories. We will also use the scanner for publishing photos and other information into our school webpage. Thank you for making this project possible. Please keep donating and helping make education better for our students. ”

Mrs. G’s Top 10 Books for 2nd Grade
Funded Apr 22, 2010Thank you so much for donating to our project. We have used our new books in a multitude of ways. We have used them for shared reading and read-out-louds. The kids have enjoyed every book. The favorite of the group was My Monster. The kids enjoyed the variation of a book they thought would be scary. In my profession it is hard to find funding for new and improved materials. I am not able to purchase these all on my own. I appreciate the donations from gracious people like yourself that enables my students to experience new and exciting literature.”

Calling All American Girls
Funded Feb 12, 2010Thank you so much for the books for our library. My students are so excited to read the new American Girl collections. It not only benefits their reading it also teaches them historical facts. Each book contains a story and then factual information in the back. The books will be available in our school library where all the students from our school will benefit. When the books became available in the library everyone wanted to check them out. We have not bought new books for the library for some time and the students are very appreciative of our new materials.
Our school, like many others, is having financial cuts. It is very important to keep programs like Donors Choose alive to keep new equipment and materials available for our students. Thank you and please keep donating! ”

This classroom project was brought to life by The Pershing Square Foundation and 5 other donors.A Baseball Card Adventure
Funded Dec 17, 2009Thank you for our new baseball books. The boys and girls that are interested in sports were so excited to start reading these new books. By the time they were labeled, stamped, and ready for the shelves the students had already decided which ones they wanted. Some of the students had read a couple in the series on their own and were very excited to read the new ones.
These books were all hard back and will last our school many years. I am so excited to add books to our library that reach the interest level of a variety of students.
Remember the books that hooked you as a reader. Before I discovered that book, I did not like reading. When I discovered the book that hooked me I found a love for reading. Thank you for helping some of my student find their love of reading. By funding you are making learning fun and exciting. ”

Star Book List
Funded Nov 12, 2009Thank you for the wonderful second grade reading material. The students have been reading more since we received the new books. Two students have finished the whole collection and earned a trip to McDonalds. The books have given the students an attainable goal.
One of my goals when introducing the Star Book List was to introduce students to classic series and get them hooked. One of the series they are required to read is The Boxcar Children. The two students that have finished the book and now are interested in reading more in this same series.
I can not wait to see the improvement in the student's reading level. Most of the students in my classroom are able to read. They have the phonemic skills to figure more difficult words out. The problem that I am seeing is their fluency. The best way to improve their fluency is by practicing. By creating this book list we are able to motivate them to practice.
Every year I spend money supporting projects in my classroom. I can not afford all of the materials I would like to provide for my students. I appreciate donors like you who support the teacher and realize the importance of a good education. Thank you again and please realize your importance in making projects like this a reality. ”

Glorious Gardeners
Funded Oct 23, 2009Thank you for all of the gardening materials. So far we have planted the tickle-me plant and the herb garden. The plants are displayed in the windows and the students are continuously observing them. The tickle-me plant is the biggest hit. The students, and teachers throughout the school, are amazed that a plant moves when you touch it.
When I speak to past students one of their fondest memories is learning with hands-on materials. They remember the special projects that they were able to do with their hands. The gardening projects are not only going to teach the students about the special purposes of plants, but also the process they must go through to care for the plants.
I can not wait to see the students feed the meat eating plants. I am absolutely positive they will be amazed that a plant can eat meat. I am also looking forward to watching the herbs fully develop and then letting the students try them on their food. Kids at this age are not willing to try many new foods, but they are already excited to try these herbs because they have grown them themselves.
Every year I spend money supporting projects in my classroom. I can not afford all of the materials I would like to provide for my students. I appreciate donors like you who support the teacher and realize the importance of a good hands-on education. Thank you again and please realize your importance in making projects like this a reality.

Rock and Roll In The Classroom
Funded May 28, 2009I would like to thank you for our classroom IPod. We are currently using the IPod to listen to music while we are working independently, lining up, and learning Spanish. I am just beginning to learn all of the features and how to download songs. I can not wait learn new and creative ways to incorporate music into every subject area.
I spoke to the students about the music and how we are going to use it. They were all very excited. I have a very active classroom and I have noticed a huge difference in the students when they are able to line up using music instead of just asked to be still and be quiet. They love dancing in line and they understand the movement has to stop when they leave the classroom. This is just one small way we have used the IPod and I am very excited about the other ways we are using it and the many more ways we will be using it.
Every year I spend hundreds of dollars on classroom materials and still long for more. I appreciate you generous donation. This is a project that we would not have been able to complete without your help. ”

Read! Read! Let’s All Read Together!
Funded Jun 2, 2009I would like to thank you for our two class sets of books. In second grade students are just beginning to read chapter books. We are really excited to be able to read these two together. The Bailey School Kids and Magic Tree House series are two of the most popular series for this age. We will read these books together and then the students will want to read the rest of the series on their own. I spoke to the students about what we are going to do and they are very excited. I let the students preview the books and get excited about reading them. We have a reading text book that the students all read together. The text book is not very interesting and only has picture books. The chapter books allow the students to be more imaginative and creative. The students create a picture in their mind of the story instead of just looking at the pictures. Every year I spend hundreds of dollars on classroom materials and still long for more. I appreciate you generous donation. This is a project that we would not have been able to complete without your help. ”

Game Time
Funded Jun 16, 2009Thank you for our new gym equipment. Last year we were trying to play kickball with a ball that was dry rotting. The rubber was so hard it hurt the kid's hands. It was so frustrating we finally quit playing kickball. Our plastic balls and bats were in the same condition. Budgets in our school have been cut to a bare minimum. We are doing everything in our power to cut funds and keep staff. Therefore the gym equipment fund is nonexistent.
My first week of school I received the packages with the new equipment. It was very exciting to know that we were going to be able to have gym class without worrying about equipment. Thursday of our first week of school was our first gym class. We used the balls and bats and the kick balls in the same day. The kids voted on what they wanted to play and everyone wanted to play both.
One of the plastic bats is oversized and easier to use. The students that have not been exposed to this sport can more easily participate. There is also a student with special needs that will be able to participate in our baseball games. His muscles in his arms are not strong enough to swing in a perfect line. This bat enables him to still hit the ball even though his swing was not perfect.
Thank you for making this project possible. It is very important to have useful equipment in order to teach physical education. I appreciate being able to teach with usable equipment. Keep funding projects and making students educational experience better.

Say Cheese!
Funded Feb 4, 2009Thank you for the wonderful new camera. The students love seeing pictures of themselves. We have only had the camera for a couple days and we have already used it immensely. We have used the camera to take a picture of our Student of the Week, our goal setting chart, and to take pictures of the classroom projects that we are currently working on.
The students love looking at our reading goal charts and seeing their pictures. It makes them more motivated when they get to see their picture moving toward the 100%. It is also a reminder to those students who are not working as fast as they need to be to pick up the pace.
It is very important for our parents to be informed about the projects we are currently working on in our classroom. When we take pictures of our greenhouse the parents can see what we are learning. It also gives them a chance to talk with their child about their day at school.
Every week we pick a new Student of the Week. This gives the students a chance to be recognized and honored for their accomplishments. We use the camera to take a picture of the student and recognize them on bulletin boards.
Another project we want to start in the future is story writing with the camera. We want to send the camera home with the students to take a special picture and then they will write about the picture. We will combine all of the pictures and stories to form a class book.
Every year I spend money supporting projects in my classroom. I can not afford all of the materials I would like to provide for my students. I appreciate donors like you who support the teacher and realize the importance of a good hands-on education. Thank you again and please realize your importance in making projects like this a reality.
