  • A Pop-Up Library for Future Artists and Engineers

    Funded Dec 28, 2023

Thank you for celebrating the love of libraries and art with this grant project!

I have been sharing pop-up books from PreK to 8th grade -- introducing Leonardo Da Vinci and seashells and construction vehicles! It's been so much fun and it creates an inclusive space in the library for English language learners and students with reading disabilities. I am working hard to alleviate the fear of books and dread of reading and to invite students to enjoy books together as a community. This is a big first step towards tackling phonics and early readers.

Our school doesn't have an art program, so our library arts and crafts classes offer students an amazing opportunity to explore literacy, science and art all at once. When manipulating 3D paper books that unfold before their eyes in flashes of color, students' creativity is stimulated and the library becomes a place of adventure.

Whole worlds open up through the panoramas, vertical and horizontal, that open children's eyes to all different subjects and spark discussion and wonder.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Jess Hinds

  • Fidgety Fun Graphic Novels!

    Funded Dec 2, 2023

Fidget toys and graphic novels are immensely popular -- and so important in building a library culture! Thank you for supporting the students in Harlem, NYC.

Students in my library love borrowing their favorite authors and they get hooked on a fun reading series. I want to give them the joy of immersing themselves in a whole other world of unicorns or witches or The Babysitter's Club. Students strengthen their reading skills and connection to characters and stories through series books.

Thank you for believing in our students and libraries!”

  • Reading Whatever Your Heart Desires Part I

    Funded Nov 28, 2023

As the school librarian, I am passionate about access for all students and I am so grateful that you also support my mission!

Our school welcomes many migrant students and those experiencing housing insecurity. My goal is to welcome students into a library that feels like a positive, uplifting space where students can be themselves and find community.

A book series like The Baybsitter's Club or My Hero Academia can feel like a dependable friend. You move predictably from book 1 to 2 to 3, and you can feel embraced by a storyline and cast of characters that feel familiar.

Thank you for helping children discover favorite characters in books and fall in love with the library.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Jess Hinds

Thanks for purchasing a class magazine about their science experiments! We now have a selection of books that will be prominently displayed in our MakerSpace that highlight the achievements of BIPOC scientists and creators. • Graphic Novels for The Joy of Reading 1

    Funded Oct 11, 2023

Thank you for your kind donation and generosity!

At our school, we want the library to be a haven, an inspiration, and a launchpad for academic excellence. Unfortunately, many of our children have been hard hit by the pandemic and have lacked opportunities to strengthen their endurance and focus to read long texts. Graphic novels to the rescue! When you open a favorite comic series like Black Panther Marvel or the Babysitter's Club, the vocabulary is quite advanced and the emotionally resonant, action-packed pages hold students' interest. I love seeing my students fall in love with books!”
