My school provides a humbling and unique experience to anyone who works there. It is one of two ESL cluster sites in our town, we take in students from the nearby homeless shelter, and have a wide variety of cultural backgrounds represented. We are constantly working on ways to make school more equitable for our students, because traditional educational norms do not suite them. We have a high number of students with behavior challenges and sensory needs. My school is considered a low income school and is a few percentage points off from being Title 1. My students are creative and very energetic. They want to do their best, but often need extra guidance to get them performing there. This year I have more Caucasian students than I have had in the past, but my class is still split about 50-50 when it comes to skin color. Many of my students come from low income homes. They have already had life experiences that no child should ever encounter. School is the safe place many of them need.
