These materials will be used by our preschool team (consisting of special educators, speech language pathologists, and para professionals) in large and small group instruction to increase students' expressive and receptive language. Our team has worked together to create a calendar with activities, using trade books, adaptive books, and toys/games, to increase the use and understanding of core vocabulary.
Core vocabulary words make up 80% of what we say everyday. These words are used over multiple settings, i.e. park, home, school, and are high-frequency words that can be used across a variety of topics and environments. Children can use these words to express themselves throughout the school day during different activities. Our students access core words using verbal expression, core vocabulary picture boards, voice output devices, and picture exchange systems. Some of the core words that we focus on are "help," "more," "stop," "go," and "want." We will focus on a different core word of the week for each week of the school year.
Our team will use the thermal laminating pouches and velcro coins to make visuals that can be used in a variety of settings. These materials also help us to keep make and keep our adaptive books, visuals, and coreboards long lasting. We plan to use the proclick and binding spines to create adaptive books that can help us teach lessons to all students. The toys and manipulatives will be used to teach understanding and use of core words. For example, party hats can be used to teach the children the words "on" and "off." We can use memory game cards to teach "same" and "different.". We can teach these concepts in a fun and meaningful to all our students with this materials.
